David Moran Obituary

David William Moran JOHNS ISLAND - Dave Moran died at his Johns Island, South Carolina home on the morning of January 18, 2010. He is survived by his beloved wife of 47 years, Virginia McCraw Moran, his three sons Robert Ridgeway Moran (Roberta), John Randolph Moran (Terry), and Daniel William Moran, his daughter Susan Moran Chase (Ethan) and grand children Roberta Moran, William Moran, Lindsay Moran, Taylor Moran, Rebecca Chase, Emily Chase, Elizabeth Moran and Joseph Moran. Dave was born in Holland Michigan. He was a graduate with honors from Kalamazoo College in Michigan where he obtained his degree in Chemistry. He worked with Dow Corning where he was the Award Winning Salesman of the year in 1965. Dave left Dow Corning to follow his love of sports founding the Boston Tennis Court Construction Company and Hanover Racquet Club with indoor tennis and platform tennis courts. Dave was also a founder of the South Carolina Paddle Tennis Association. He was a United States Tennis Association teaching professional for thirty years and received that organization's Distinguished Service Award. He was the founder of Boston-Charleston Company which he operated until his retirement importing bulk chemicals for manufacturing. He spent the final years of his life in the development of the property that he loved on Johns Island. Dave's love for sports led him to outstanding accomplishments in several different areas. His tennis team from the small school of Kalamazoo College finished fifth in the nation and the team was named to the Kalamazoo College Hall of Fame. He was nationally ranked in junior and amateur tennis and he excelled in basketball as a high school and college player with Kalamazoo College winning the Mid-West Regional NAIA. As an amateur tennis player he won the Doubles Championship for the Missouri Valley region covering seven states and the New England Thirty-five and Over Doubles Championship. He excelled in tournament level Badminton, Platform Tennis and Paddle Tennis. On the quieter side he enjoyed ice fishing in Michigan and shrimping in South Carolina. Dave contributed to his community as member of Rotary International for forty years and was a recipient of that organization's Paul Harris Fellowship Award. His humor, his service to his community, his freely aired opinions, his leadership and his grand sportsmanship will be missed by all who knew him. Contributions in lieu of flowers will be greatly appreciated by family and friends and should be made to Palmetto Health Hospice, 1815 Old Trolley Road, Summerville, South Carolina. Burial and memorial will be private by the family. The Moran family is being served by PALMETTO CREMATION SOCIETY, Charleston, SC. Visit our guestbook at www.postandcourier.com/deaths

Dan, I was saddened to hear of your father's passing. I did not know your father personally, but I did in a way know him from our many talks. Heartfelt prayers go with you and yours through these tough times. Call if you need anything.

The passing of any contemporary, of a classmate in college, strikes home with the force of a winter storm. Sadder yet is the vacuum of not having been in touch with Dave Moran over the years. Classmates and teammates are memories recalled and savored. Dave, in 1954, reached out a welcoming hand to a swaggering big city kid that, at times, wondered what he was doing in Kalamazoo. light years distant from The Bronx of NYC.

In essence, Dave said, "Welcome to our world and, while here, show us what you have!" Not a challenge, by any stretch of the imagination. Rather, an invitation.

He was memorable and the measure of a man now gone is your recall of what he was...away from the nets, courts and baskets. What he did in life after we all graduated speaks volumes...family, community, friends, achievement. Remember the man, Dave Moran, and his accomplishments...missed, of course, right now but never forgotten.

My own disappointment is not having been in touch over the years but I do remember...and that I share to some small degree.

God speed Dave, rest easy and my prayers are with the entire Moran family.

I was a classmate of Dave, both in Chemistry and on the '55 and '56 tennis teams. I remember well our struggles in Quant. Lab. I once substituted for Dave At #6 on the tennis team. I lost but Dave would have probably won. He had a keen sense of humor, was liked by all and a very good tennis player especially in doubles with that wonderful slice serve. He will be missed by all. My prayers are with you.

There is a time for everything,
and a season for every activity under heaven:

a time to be born and a time to die,
a time to plant and a time to uproot....

... a time to weep and a time to laugh,
a time to mourn and a time to dance,

John

Sorry to hear about your dad. I have fond memories of playing tennis with him and as usual he gave me advice on how to improve my game. I remember his humor and love for the game of tennis. Your family is in my prayers.

I was a classmate of Dave at K College. Dave was a wonderful athlete, & was loved by all. Dave sat in front of me in Doc Stowe's Chemistry class. Dave did a lot better than I did in that class. Dave seemed to have everything: very good looks, great athlete, great sense of humor, was popular with everyone. On top of that he was very intelligent. What more could anyone ask for? Modest, no swelled head for his numerous accomplishments. We'll miss him! Paul VanStone, 8108 Cosata Brava Ct, Naples, FL 34109, Class of '56.

I am so sorry to hear of Dave’s passing. I have thought of him often over the years. Dave was always ready to give his opinion and suggest a way to get things done but it was because he genuinely cared, simply put, Dave cared. He was bigger than life. Dave will be missed by all who knew him.
