David Hooker Obituary

David Eugene Hooker N. CHARLESTON - David Eugene Hooker, son of the late William James Hooker and Doshia Mae Hooker, was born on September 29, 1923 in Moultrie, Georgia and died on Sunday, February 24, 2013. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 2, 2013 at the Wesley United Methodist Church in Summerville with Reverend James Cannion officiating. Viewing for family and friends will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the church. Burial will be in the Macedonia United Methodist Church Cemetery in Cottageville. Mr. Hooker enrolled at South Carolina State College in Orangeburg, South Carolina in 1941 and was called to serve in the Army during World War II. He was a First Sergeant. He returned to the College in 1946 and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1948. He earned a Master of Education degree at Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University in Tallahassee, Florida in 1960. He taught school and served as a school administrator at a Simpsonville, South Carolina high school where he met his wife of 52 years, the former Julia Ann "Annie" Grant. The couple married in 1951. From the late 1950s to 1970, he served as principal of an elementary school in Doerun, Georgia, which was renamed the David E. Hooker Elementary School in 1966. In 1971, he and his family moved to Summerville, South Carolina. He began a second career at the Charleston and North Charleston offices of the South Carolina Employment Security Commission, where he was employed as a job placement specialist and supervisor until he retired in 1988. Mr. Hooker was a dedicated church worker at Mother Easter Baptist Church in Moultrie, Georgia and later a faithful member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Summerville, South Carolina. He was predeceased by his wife, Annie. He is survived by his daughter, Eugenia Hooker of Spartanburg; two brothers, Thomas Hooker of Nashua, New Hampshire, and Homer Hooker of Memphis, Tennessee; several nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. Mr and Mrs. David E. Hooker were two very influential people, in the Doerun and Moultrie communities. My first memory of Mr. Hooker was when i was in the first grade at the elementary school. My husband first remembers the couple in 1969, Mrs. Hooker was his first teacher.
