To Sissy, Batson, and family,
I can not find the words to express the influence David had on my life. He was rightly our class president because he was a natural leader, but he was also one of the boys. He would do most anything that was a challange or held the promise of adventure. One night we decided to climb the water tower at SMA at about 2:00 AM and did so. Another time I saw him shinny up the flag pole in front of Quintard all the way to the top (about 4 stories). I have many more memories of David that I will always cherish. He was a good friend and I loved him. Kingman White

To David's family and to Batson:
The boarding school life I shared with "Babe" Hewitt at Sewanee, from 1964-1968, and occasionally outside of school during the summer, have an indeliable and special meaning to me. We were only boys of tender age, 14-18, but it became obvious pretty quickly that one among us was a born leader of men. David set the example for many of us, allowing us a glimpse at what leadership and integrity really meant. For many, this is where our values came from - from our peers like Babe - not the authority figures such as teachers and administrators. David had a frequent saying about a contract being your word. It defined him. My life was deeply enriched by knowing David, and he will be missed by many, many of his friends.

Sissy...my thoughts are with you and your family. David and I were childhood friends and enjoyed many a spirited football game together on the playgrounds many years ago. I always said David was the best football player ever to play at East Bay Playground....a gentle man and an old friend.

I was traveling last week and heard the sad news and hate that I wasn't able to get to the funeral for this incredible guy. I first met David in the mid 60's when he was at SMA and then had the pleasure of being a KA with him at USC. I'll never forget his huge personality, warmth, heart, and humor! My deepest sympathy to all his loved ones. Whit Moore

Sissy,Pitts. and Angie,
We all will miss David but we were so lucky to have had him in our lives and to have known him for he made us all a better person by having known him.
David was a man's man.
Someone we hoped we could be one tenth as good as he was to everyone. He gave happiness to everyone he encountered. I am lucky to have known him and to have been his friend along the way.
Everyone who knew him loved him.

Although I did not have the honor of knowing Mr. Hewitt and his amazing wife more than just being his nurse assistant at MUSC, he has always been in my prayers and in a good amount of my funny stories shared in nursing school. He was my favorite patient I've ever had, and I will keep Mrs. Hewitt and the rest of his family in my prayers.

My deepest sympathy to the family at this time. I will always have such fond memories of David duck hunting with us through the years down here in Arkansas. He brought Pitts, Batson,Costa and others through the years and always enjoyed them hunting more than he did. Billy Lesane was down a month ago and I was able to talk to David on the phone and describe to him how our hunt went and sure wish he could of been here. We still use the term "pinkish hue" as the sunrises to huury us up as David wouldnt want to miss that first opportunity of the morning. From his old boots with duct tape on them(saw them last week) to his great story telling and jokes, he left an imprint on the farmers we rented from to the hunting buddies we brought with us.I know he will be missed back home, but duck hunting in Arkansas will never be the same without David Hewitt. My prayers go out to the family and find peace in knowing his suffering has ended. May God bless you all.

David Hewitt was a unique and powerful spirit. Seldom do you meet such a soul. He loved people and he loved to be with them. I remember how at parties, years ago, he would stand in one place and suddenly, as if expressing his enthusiasm for a perfect party moment, he would spring into a back flip and land on his feet again, stunning everyone. His gusto was so infectious. He relished his life and loved his family. He took the time to acknowledge and embrace everyone he met. The man had goodness. His soul just shone. Many years ago he was a good friend. I always thought I’d see him again. All my love and condolences to Sissy and all of his many family members and to his abundant grieving friends.

David was an exceptional person. I met him during my first year in military school. I remember him as a fierce competitor, an accomplished actor, but most of all a MAN with a sense of humor. He had perspective in a world run by adolescents. He knew where he wanted to be and he conducted himself accordingly. I will always appreciate his kindness to me. All of us were better because of David. He left a large footprint for many of us to follow.

to the Hewitt family,
I am so sad tonight to have learned of this sad event; David and Batson were and always will be integral to the lives of so many of us in our days at Sewanee Military Academy. David treated all of his classmates with class and dignity, and taught all of us how to evolve into young men when we were lost and needed guidance in those early days of our lives. I have NEVER forgotten how important he was to us, and I will always remember his brother Batson in the same light. These two boys (when I knew them) were men long before anybody else knew what the word meant, and their legacies at Sewanee will live forever. I, along with all of my classmates are heartbroken.
