David Hammer Obituary

David Lee Hammer GOOSE CREEK - TSgt. David L. Hammer, USAF Ret., passed away Monday, February 18, 2013 at Trident Regional Hospital. A memorial service with military honors will be held at 3:00 pm Thursday, February 21, 2013 in J. HENRY STUHR, INC, NORTHWOODS CHAPEL, 2180 Greenridge Road. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Born May 22, 1938 in Logan, Ohio, the son of the late Ruth and Carl Hammer. Dave served for 23 years in USAF including being an advisor in Vietnam. He also served tours in the United Kingdom, Germany and throughout the United States including NORAD. After retiring he worked at the Naval Weapons Station and at the USS Yorktown museum. He was a lifetime member of VFW Post 10256, American Legion Post 1066 and Fraternal Order of Eagles in Crooksville, OH and Ancient Order of Foresters. Known around Goose Creek as "Hammer" he never met a person he didn't like to talk to. Preceded in death by his parents, grandparents and brother; he is survived by his wife of 46 years, Margaret Ann and two loving daughters, Dawn K. and Mark Davis of Goose Creek, SC and Julia K. and Brent Petterson of James Island, SC and three adorable grandchildren, Hailey Disher, Emily Baumstark and Oliver Petterson. I am so sorry to hear about Davids passing. I worked with David at the Naval Weapons Station. He always had a smile and he was always making us laugh. He was a devoted family man. He loved his country and his family. I haven't seen David in over 16 years but I can remember like it was yesterday. He always had a kind word and a smile for everyone. He will still be watching over you until you meet again. Your family are in my prayers. Stephanie

I am at a loss for words to this tremendous loss. I have known Hammer for almost 20 years (when I first became a bartender in Goose Creek at Lou's Tavern). In that time I got to know the genuine, respected man that he was. He had an awesome sense of humor and I will never forget that smile and kind word that he had for everyone that crossed paths with him. The pleasure of knowing Hammer was all mine and I will forever keep him in my heart until we meet again. My condolences to his family. He was a wonderful soul!

I was so very sorry to learn about David's passing. He was a lot of fun to work with at Patriots Point, but then you knew from working out here too. I always though it was cute to hear you call him "Pops". He was so very proud of you and Dawn. Please pass my condolences to Dawn and your mom.

Dear Margaret and family. I am so saddened to learn of Dave's passing. He and I go back almost to the beginning of time. He always let me know that I was 5 months older. We went to school together, we went into the Air Force together, we served in Germany together, we got out together, stood in the unemployment line together, went back in together, and went to technical school together in Denver. And then we lost contact with each other for about 35 years. We reconnected in the mid-1990s. I was glad to learn we were both in Vietnam at about the same time, and that neither of us had lost our taste in good beer, good conversation, and great family life. In our last conversation, just as we were hanging up, he said “I love ya, man.” Me too, Dave. “I love ya, man. And peace, love, and comfort to all of you.

I would like to send my condolences to Ms. Margaret,Dawn,Julia,and his three beautiful and handsome grandchildren.I met Hammer a little over three years ago being one out of four bartenders from Nowhere who had the privilege to meet and also get to know him pretty well.I knew he loved and cherished his wife,daughters,and grandchildren very much.I remember how excited and proud he was when he finally had a grandson.Hammer was a man who loved and cherished every moment with his family.I am very sad to know he is gone,but he will never be forgotten.I will miss his smile,his laughs,and our conversations.Even though his time is up,he will always be watching over his family just how he was when he was here.I can honestly say he is in a better place and is waitng for the day to reunite with his lovely wife.Hammer worked with my stepfather on the Naval Weapon Station years ago and during the time I was his bartender,I had the chance to introduce him to my husband and five children who he also got to know pretty well.Like I said before,I am extremely sad to hear he is gone and he will always be missed not only by me but his family and freinds also.I love you Hammer.
