David Gregg Obituary

David Charles Gregg James Island - David Charles Gregg, 75, of James Island, husband of Susan (Susi) Robertson Gregg for 49 years, entered the arms of his heavenly Savior, Jesus Christ, on December 5, 2021, after a 6-year battle with ALS which he fought with dignity and courage. Born on November 26, 1946, in Orangeburg, SC, David was the son of Myrtle Dantzler Gregg and Spencer Martin Gregg who preceded him in death. David grew up in North Charleston, SC. Upon graduating from Garrett High School, David attended Massey Junior College in Atlanta where he majored in accounting and computer automation. Once he graduated, he was drafted into the Army and served two years in Masweller, Germany. David entered private business by joining Ruscon Construction where he used his skills of computing and accounting to further his knowledge of construction. David enjoyed working at Ruscon as that is where he met Susi. They were married in 1972 and lived on James Island where they raised a Christian family. David left Ruscon for a job with Great American Systems and learned a lot working with WANG computers, eventually coming to work with Mr. Charles R. Hipp at C. R. Hipp Inc. where he worked for 39 years in the mechanical construction industry. David was a key member of the Hipp family business, becoming the Office Manager for C. R. Hipp Inc. David was active in the Charleston Contractors Assoc., The Mechanical Contractors of SC, and the American Subcontractors Assoc. among others. David continued working for Encompass Systems when they purchased C. R. Hipp Construction in 1999 and was the CFO and Controller for the Charleston Office during the next three years. He was a partner in the formation of C. R. Hipp Construction Inc. in 2003 when Encompass sold the assets to him and Al Hitchcock. They began a new company with the purchased assets and immediately formed a partnership that built a new office and building on Dorchester Road. David was CFO of that company until his retirement in the fall of 2016. He was recognized for the excellent record of ownership and dedication over his career. David had pioneered the company into the computer age by creating programs that allowed computer estimating for all their projects. David joined the North Charleston Breakfast Rotary Club in 2000 and was a proud member and serving member for sixteen years. He enjoyed all his friends and members and worked diligently on all their projects. He was a respected and devoted member who believed in the Rotary principles and achieved perfect attendance throughout his membership. David purchased a second home on Lake Marion in Summerton, SC, and loved to spend time there with Susi and their friends and family, boating, driving the jet ski, fishing, or just sitting on the deck enjoying watching the lake and their beloved bluebirds. On Sundays, they attended Fellowship of Praise Church where they discovered a renewed relationship with God through their pastor, Ronnie Spiers, and many loving members. Besides his wife, Susi, David is survived by one daughter, Cameron Gregg Nistad (Gunnar) and their three children, McCrae, Gunnar Jr., and Mason; and one son, Kevan and his son Alden. He is also survived by his sisters, Helen Shirley and Betty Brandhorst. David was preceded in death by his brothers, Spencer Gregg, William Smith, and M.J. Smith; along with his sisters, Mildred Myers and Gertrude Colson. A funeral service will be held on Friday, December 10, 2021, in New Beginnings Church at 12:00 pm. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Thursday, December 9, 2021, in the J. Henry Stuhr Inc., West Ashley Chapel, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, consider a donation to ALS.org to help fight this disease. Visit our guestbook at legacy.com/obituaries/charleston

Dave will be known for his physical courage in fighting ALS. I remember his moral courage, in knowing the right thing to do and then doing the right thing right, even when it was not always popular. I loved Dave as one of the finest humans I have met. He is one of the few in this business whose numbers were always accurate and credible.

Susan I am so very sorry for the loss of your beloved husband. I knew David from him being a patron at the James Island Library. What a kind and wonderful man. He would pick up the books for him and Susan. He was always a joy to chat with and had such an upbeat and positive attitude. Susan, I am thinking of you and your family and will keep you in my prayers.
