David Crum Obituary

David Hart Crum DENMARK, SC - David Hart Crum, son of John Wesley and Priscilla Hart Crum of Denmark, South Carolina, died on June 28, 2012. He was born on July 11, 1927 in Denmark, South Carolina. David brought love, laughter, and light into the life of everyone who knew him. David was a World War II veteran and served principally in the Pacific. His last station was on Guam. After his discharge from the Army, David returned to the University of South Carolina, and was awarded his bachelor's degree in 1953. He then attended the University of South Carolina Law School, receiving his LL.B. At USC, he was a member of Omicron Delta Kappa and Phi Delta Phi, both leadership service fraternities. David moved to Washington, D.C., where he served as one of Senator Strom Thurmond's first Senatorial aides. After his father's death, David returned to Denmark to practice law with his brother, Henry Hayne Crum, at the firm founded by his father. He practiced law in Denmark for the remainder of his life, and was true servant to his town, community, and his clients. David was a member of many organizations and boards, including the Lion's Club. He served on the Bamberg District 2 School Board, was an active member of Bethel Park Methodist Church, and sang in the church choir and the Columbia Choral Society, among his many activities. To know David was to love him. He was a true Southern gentleman, a man of great personal integrity, and a friend to the whole community. As well as being a skilled and trusted attorney, he was a compassionate man, a wonderful raconteur, and the life of many parties. David made the world a better place. He was an inspiration to all who knew him, and will always be in the hearts of his family, friends, and the many people he has helped in his professional and personal life. David was predeceased by his father and mother John Wesley and Priscilla Hart Crum, his brother Henry Hayne Crum, and his sister Caroline Crum Hunt. He is survived by his sister-in-law of 66 years, Mary Bass Crum, his brother's and Mary's children, Mary Elizabeth Crum (James H. Byrum, Jr.), John Wesley Crum III (Eleanor Rainey Crum) and Henry Hayne Crum III, and his sister Caroline's children, Samuel P. Hunt III (Cynthia Boice Hunt), Priscilla Hart Hunt (Victor Lesser), Jennifer Crum Hunt, and Henry Thomas Hunt (Janet Berney Hunt). David has nine great nieces and nephews and six great-great nieces and nephews, two of whom are namesakes. I am so sorry to learn of David's passing. His death marks the end of an era in which the practice of law meant so much more than it does today. I know he will be sorely missed.

It was with deep sorrow that I heard of David's passing. I have worked for years with David through his good friend Spruce McCain's office with many real estate transactions. Always a gentleman, and always a great conversationalist. I will miss him!

David assisted the Drucker family when our Father's health declined. He will always be remembered as Denmark's perfect ambassador to the rest of South Carolina.

David was a friend of the Christie family through three generations and when I returned to Denmark after many years, it was as if we had spent all those years in between in constant communion. He was a gentleman as well as a gentle man, a Democrat to the core, and a giant in a land of pygmies.
I will miss you my friend, drop in for a meal any time.

I'm so saddened to hear of David's passing. His wit, wisdom and unbridled zest for life were uplifting to all, and made every encounter a gratifying experience. His was an exemplary life well-lived and my thoughts and prayers to his family.

We were saddened to learn of of Mr Crum's passing, and extend our sincere condolences to the family.

We are grateful for his patriotic service to his country in WWII as a soldier in the U.S. Army; and for his community and state service. He was truly a member of the "Greatest Generation."

Our prayer is God will comfort you in your time of sorrow, and you remain in our thoughts.
