David Bowie Obituary

David L. Bowie N. CHARLESTON - David Lesley Bowie, age 78, of North Charleston, SC, died Friday, June 11, 2010, at a local hospital. He was born in Cleveland, OH on February 22, 1932, to the late Thomas S. and Lesley I. Bowie. He resided and attended schools in Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, Virginia, and California. He resided in St. Charles, IL from 1965 to 2003, and then moved to Charleston, SC. He earned his bachelor of Architecture - Structural Option from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, NY in 1954. He was a licensed Architect in the State of Illinois in 1967, and a Registered Architect in the State of South Carolina in 2003. He was a member of the American Institute of Architects from 1976 until the present; President of AIA Eastern Illinois Chapter, Secretary AIA Illinois 1987; Chairman Illinois Architect/Engineer Council 1994; and a Member AIA Charleston 2003 to present. He served his country in the United States Navy and attended OCS, Newport, RI, in 1956. He was Commissioned in August 1956. He saw Active Duty on the USS Recovery (ARS-43), XO, USS Chickasaw (ATF-83), Reserve Duty at Joliet, IL from 1960 to 1979, and Retired as a Lt. Commander. He was employed in various institutions and Architectural firms in northeast Illinois through 1960, including the principal of The Architects, Joliet 1974-1979; Argonne National Laboratory, 1980 - 1995, and retired in 1995, specification consulting and minor residential projects 1995 to present. He is survived by his wife: Maralyn Ryan of North Charleston, SC; sons: James R. Bowie of Elgin, IL, and Christopher T. Bowie of Phoenix, AZ; step daughter: Lisa Jones of Taccoa, GA; stepsons: Michael Southard of North Charleston, SC and Steven Southard of Atlanta, GA. The family is accepting floral tributes, or in lieu of flowers donations may be made in David L. Bowie's honor to Susan Komen Breast Cancer Fund, P.O. Box 650309 Dallas, TX 75265-0309, or to Charleston Habitat for Humanity, PO Box 21479 Charleston, SC 29413, or to the SCORE Foundation, 4135 Centergate Blvd., Sarasota, FL 43233. Memorial Services will be at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, June 16, 2010, at Carolina Memorial Funeral Chapel, 7113 Rivers Ave., North Charleston, SC 29406. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday, June 16, 2010, from 9:30 AM until the time of service at the funeral home.
