David Backus Obituary

David Haskins Backus II David Haskins Backus, II died peacefully in Sonoma, Calif., on March 29, 2011. He was 72. A native of North Hollywood, Calif., born at the Glendale Research Hospital in Los Angeles to David Haskins Backus and Marian Frances Wolcott, he grew up in Los Angeles and moved with his family to the Napa Valley in 1953 where he graduated from High School. He is survived by his son Jonathan Madsen Backus of Ontario, Canada and by his grandson Aaron of Belgium. He is survived by his brother Bob (Carol) Backus, of Wardsboro, Vt., by his nieces: Jennifer Backus of Washington, DC; Carrie Backus of An-Arbor, Mich., and Sophie Backus-Levy of Burlington, Vt. David received a degree in Anthropology from the University of California at Berkley and went on to get his Masters from the University of California at San Francisco and his PhD in Clinical Psychology from the University of Arizona. He was gifted with an exceptionally high IQ, a love of all people and a special fondness for, and an understanding of Jazz and Delta Blues which he shared with his listeners on his radio show in Sonoma County California. He was completely without prejudice accepting each human being as they were. His life was about learning and being with friends. He faced his ills without complaint and he admitted and accepted responsibility for his faults. He entered his last days with composure and understanding. He was a very kind, gentle and good man who will be missed. His brother gives special thanks to David Johnson, his mentor, who was such a caring guide in his life journey and to the staff at Golden Living in Sonoma, Calif., who gave him exceptional care. Contributions may be made in David's name and memory to the charity/cause of your choice. At his request there will be no formal Services. Inurnment will be in the family plot at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Glendale, CA. His wish was that all find peace, understanding and brotherhood in your lives. Arrangements under the direction of Duggan's Mission Chapel, Mission Cremation Service, 525 West Napa Street, Sonoma, CA.
