Darrel McKeown Obituary

Darrel Wayne McKeown N. CHARLESTON - Darrel Wayne McKeown, 68, of North Charleston, SC, peacefully passed away on Sunday, September 3, 2023. Darrel was born on January 19, 1955, in Waterloo, IA, to late Donald W. and Joan E. McKeown. He is survived by wife, Robin McKeown of North Charleston, SC; sister, Margaret (Jim) Beninga of Dike, IA; brother, Thomas McKeown of Tujunga, CA; daughters, Kathy (Bruce) Masters of Goose Creek, SC, Rachael (David) Franks of North Charleston, SC; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A memorial service for Darrel will be held at the Fleet Reserve Association Low Country at 99 Wisteria Rd., Goose Creek, SC, on Sunday, September 24, at 2pm. Darrel McKeown was a quick-witted man, funny, loving, and loyal. In 1974, he joined the Navy and worked in electronics, radio communications, and crypto. He served 20 years, having traveled to Italy, Sardinia, Spain, among other places. After the Navy, he worked in the field of information technology. In his downtime, he enjoyed riding his motorcycle, working on his ham radios, playing pranks on his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, playing pool with friends and fellow veterans, and volunteering his time with CERT, the Patriot Guard, and his local HOA. Although having no biological children of his own, throughout his life Darrel gained 8 stepdaughters that he took in as his own, loving and protecting and helping them. He will be missed by many.
