Daniel M. "Danny" Nelson Sr.

Daniel M. "Danny" Nelson Sr., 76, of Farmington, passed away on Saturday, Aug. 13, 2011. Danny was born Aug. 9, 1935, in Aztec.
In 1953, he graduated from Aztec High School, where he also was on the basketball team.
In 1973, he founded Dawn Trucking and his savvy and prudent business skills built the company into a large and successful operation.
Danny enjoyed golf and was a member of the San Juan Country Club. He also was an avid dirt track racing fan.
Danny was a generous soul and he lightened the lives of countless people with his timely wit and humor.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Ila Nelson; and his brother, Jack Nelson.
His is survived by his loving wife, Chavela Nelson; his children, Lynnell Boyd and husband, David, of Grand Junction, Colo., Daniel Nelson Jr. and wife, Hollie, of Scottsdale, Ariz., Jack Nelson and wife, Tammie, of Farmington, Craig Nelson and wife, Kacie, of Farmington, Natalie Tabet and husband, James, of Farmington; stepson, Oscar Garcia of Scottsdale, Ariz., his mother-in-law, Estella Sanchez and husband, Ernie; his siblings, William Nelson of Canyon Lake, Texas, Rosella Hall of Aztec, Myrene Boren of Tuttle, Okla., Joyce Paddack of Las Vegas, Nev., and his brother-in-law, Raul Fiveash of Yuma, Ariz. He is also survived by 16 grandchildren, William Nelson, Julie Benson, Neil Benson, Nickolas Nelson, David Benson, Daniel Nelson III, Samantha Jo Nelson, Whitney Nelson, Courtney Nelson, Danielle Nelson, Chaynee Tabet, Boone Tabet, Riley Nelson, Dixie Tabet, Coby Tabet and Jacob Nelson; as well as three great-grandchildren, Bailey, Payson and Lyle Blouin.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 16, at Daniels Family Funeral Services, 804 N. Dustin Ave. in Farmington.
The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 17, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 414 N. Allen Ave. in Farmington.
Pallbearers are Garland Tucker, Robert Wilson, David Coponiti, Johnny Sandoval, Ed Boren, Leroy Hartsfield.
Honorary pallbearers are Johnny Franchini and all Dawn Trucking employees.
A special thank you is extended to Kathy Sanchez and the care providers at Basin Home Health and PALS.

In 1971 Garland went to work for Danny Nelson Sr. Not only was he a boss, but a friend and most of all our mentor. Our hearts swell with pride to of known such a great man.

Danny and Family & I lived across from each other in the late fifties on 13th Street in Fairview Village. Their five children and my three children and all the other children on the street would play in front of our houses. 13th street was a cul de sac. Danny and I remained friends up until now. What a nice and generous man. I will miss seeing him from time to time.

Danny was one of my surrogate Dad's growing up on 13th street in Fmgt. Had the pleasure of being around him again at the SJCC both in the Locker Room and on the Golf Course and when I worked for the Lacey's in the Golf Shop. He was a Hell of a Guy who affected many peoples lives. Danny Jr..Jack..and Lynell I feel your pain and send my condolences. God Bless
