Daniel Brake Obituary

Dr. Daniel Walter Brake, Sr. Mt. Pleasant - Dr. Daniel W. Brake, Sr., 77, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, husband of Sue Roach Brake, died August 8, 2017. He grew up in Lake City, SC, son of the late Gladys Nettles Brake and Daniel Washington Brake. He attended Wofford College where he made life-long friends, many who joined him at the Medical University of South Carolina. His Internship and Family Practice Residency were completed at Charlotte Memorial Hospital. Next he served in the US Air Force at Wright Patterson and as Hospital Commander in Greenland. The following ten years he practiced in Conway and served as Chief of Staff and President of the Board of Directors of the Conway Hospital, as well as Chairman of Horry County Board of Health. He and his family then moved to Middleton Place near Charleston; thereafter, Dr. Brake spent thirty years as a family physician in the South Carolina Lowcountry. Founder and President of Trident Family Practice and one of the originators of Palmetto Primary Care Physicians, he served as President of the South Carolina Medical Association in 1989, Tri-County Health Department Chairman, SC delegate to the American Medical Association, and a board member of the Red Cross, United Way and Boy Scouts of America. He received many accolades, some of which included Best Doctors of America 1998, South Carolina Family Physician of the Year in 2000, and MUSC Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2001. He also provided pro bono medical services to Mepkin Abbey Monastery, and served on mission trips to Nicaragua. Dr. Brake was devoted to his family, friends and his patients. Whether practicing medicine, playing the guitar or tennis, traveling or fishing, he loved spending time with others and it was the quality of these interactions and the joy that he brought to them that made him so special. Dr. Brake is survived by his wife of 52 years, Sue R. Brake, Mt. Pleasant; sister, Anne Brun, Redlands, CA; a daughter, Shannon Brake de Vivies (Philippe), Arles, France; and a son, Dr. Daniel W. Brake, Jr. (Melanie), Greenville, SC; and five grandchildren, Juliette, Maxime, and Chloe de Vivies and Grayson and Hunter Brake. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, August 13th, at St. Andrew's Church, Mount Pleasant. Information at the Palmetto Cremation Society website. A family service will be held at Mepkin Abbey Columbarium on Saturday. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial to the Red Cross, Mepkin Abbey, St. Andrews Church, or the Lewy Body Association. Dr. Brake was a kind and wonderful person. My family and I did not know him as a physician but as a family friend. Our condolences are to the entire Brake family, especially his wife Sue, the children Daniel Jr and Shannon, and the grandchildren. Dr. Brake was always quick with a smile and a story or a perceptive question depending on the situation. Our hearts go out to all feeling the loss of a truly kind and gentle soul.

Dan Brake was full of grace and affability. His tolerance and cheer was extraordinary. There will be a huge void of love and approval in my world without Dan.
There seems to be a lack of justice when someone so special is consumed by a debilitating disease such as Lewy' s body. Dan never lost his beautiful demeanor of acceptance throughout life and it served him well in dealing with this challenge. May God bestow upon Dan's family comfort and peace as they adjust to his absence.

Generally, the term "uncle-in-law" isn't used very often, a fellow rarely gets to know his wife's mother's sister's husband...but Dan was different. "Uncle-in-law" Dan Brake made all of us who married into the family feel welcome and part of the clan. Dan made sure that everyone knew he cared about them, he was always quick with a joke or some "fatherly advice" for those of us who don't have fathers. He was generous and kind and impacted the lives of so many people. He raised great kids and created a great life for his family. As a Doctor, his healing hands helped thousands of people live better lives. He will be missed by all of us very , very much.

I am sorry for your loss.. he was truly a Great Man.
