Dale Cook Obituary

Dale Jay Cook Hanahan - Dale "Jay" Cook, age 60, passed away in the comfort of his home with loved ones by his side on January 16th, 2019. Jay was the loving and devoted husband to Susan Cook, beloved father to sons DJ (Ashton), Adam (Emmy), and Travis (Lindsey), grandfather to Easton Jay, Lilly Rene, Julian James, and Sawyer Lee. He was the son of John Dale Cook and the late Donna Sue Landrum Cook, and brother to Tony and Michael Cook. He leaves behind many other loved family members and dear friends.

Jay had a large personality, a huge presence, and he shared those qualities through his involvement in many organizations and associations locally and globally. When his sons were young, Jay devoted time to coaching multiple youth sports teams. He was the former owner of Azalea Moving and Storage from 1981 to 2008. The Post and Courier once described him as having "the body of a bear and the voice of a college football coach." He was the former president of the South Carolina Movers Conference, the District Chair of Rotary 7770 Youth Exchange Program, a member of Rotary Charleston Breakfast Club and Rotary Readers. He was the previous Director of Operations for Water Mission and Past Commodore of Charleston Ocean Racing Association (C.O.R.A).

A true salty dog, Jay was passionate about every aspect of sailing, racing, and teaching. He adored his Tohidu Crew and they would have followed him through any storm (even a rum front!).

He also enjoyed reading, woodworking, eating, drinking margaritas, sharing milk and cookies with his dog Git-li, and he loved to tell a good story! He touched the lives of so many people and the story of Jay Cook will live on through them.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, January 19, 2018 at J. HENRY STUHR, INC., MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL, 1494 Mathis Ferry Road, Mt. Pleasant from 5:00 until 7:00 pm. The funeral service will be held on Sunday, January 20, 2019 in East Cooper Baptist Church, 361 Egypt Road, Mt. Pleasant at 3:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations may be made in Jay's name to Water Mission, 1150 Kinzer St., Bldg 1605, North Charleston, SC 29405 (watermission.org) or Charleston Community Sailing, 17 Lockwood Drive, Charleston, SC 29401(charlestoncommunitysailing.org).

It was sad to learn of the passing on of Jay. I recall how Jay welcomed me to Charleston on my first visit in 2015. I felt more comfortable under his guidance, invited me to a fellowship with the Rotary Club of Charleston Breakfast and later had a memorable sailing in his boat with fellow colleagues around the world. He was indeed a very good jolly fellow.

May God be with Susan and the rest of the Cook Family.

I will never forget how kind Dale was to me in 1995 after my husband died and I have to move out of our home in Summerville. He was truly a Godsend to me at that time. They all came in and I had no idea what to do or which way to turn moving everything. At a difficult time he and his crew did a fantastic job.

Our Families Certainly Send The Kindest Thoughts To Susan, Sons, And Grandchildren Of Jay. It's Been A Few Years Since I Was Privileged To Be A Member Of The Rotary Club Of Charleston Breakfast With Him. The Shock That Was Felt With All Of Our Family Over The Loss Of Jay Will Always Be Remembered. Everything And More That Was Written About Him Is Indeed Right On Point, And Jay Was Both Commendable And Trustworthy. The Club Members Will Always Owe Jay A Debt Of Gratitude For Heading Up The Rotary Exchange Program Of District 7770 And I Will Always Miss Jay In A Very Personal Way. May God Be With Susan And The Rest Of The Cook Family At This Time.

Who did not love Jay Cook? So
Many students from around the Globe enjoyed water excursions with Jay when he was involved with Youth Exchange & shared his home with he & Susan. A great leader, sailor & friend to so many. Greatly missed by all of us in Rotary District 7770 & beyond. Farewell good & faithful servant - you have earned your rest!
