Curtis Moody Obituary

Curtis R. Moody JAMES ISLAND - Curtis Raymond Moody, 88, of James Island, SC, passed away peacefully on January 18, 2021 with family holding his hand. His kindness, generosity, smile, and love for everyone will always be remembered by those that knew him. Curtis was born on December 27, 1932 to the late Curtis and Gertrude Nance Moody in Bermuda, SC, in Dillon County. He married his high school sweetheart, the late Catherine Hayes Moody, in 1953 and they shared 55 years of marriage. He graduated from Lake View High School and attended Florence Business School. He served in the Navy during the Korean War aboard the USS Burdo and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal. He worked hard throughout his life, first as a farmer for over a decade, then with the Life of Georgia Insurance Company for 14 years, and finally 20 years as caretaker at the Bonnie Doone Retreat Center of the Charleston Baptist Association. Even in retirement he always found jobs and work to be done. Curtis dedicated his life to serving God and others. He was a longtime member of James Island Baptist Church and cherished his Genesis Sunday School class. With his friend, Marjorie Ridgeway, he also attended Portside Baptist Church and was a member of the Gideon Sunday School Class. He was a Master Mason for 66 years and was a past Worshipful Master, as well as a past Worthy Patron in the Order of the Eastern Star. Surviving are his daughters, Trudy Moody Gregorie Beatty (David) of Ashburn, VA, and Bonita Springs, FL, and Charlene Moody of Myrtle Beach, SC; sister, Francine Moody Hayes of Dillon, SC; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends he dearly loved. He was also predeceased by his sister and her husband, Nelle and John Herring of Marion, SC; father-in-law, Hardy H. Hayes of Bermuda, SC; brothers-in-law, Ben Hayes (and wife, Ann) of Pamplico, SC, and Jim Hayes of Dillon, SC; and sons-in-law, Russell Gregorie, of James Island, SC, and Bobby Frye, of Myrtle Beach, SC. In keeping with his spirit of love and giving to others, Curtis donated his body to the Medical University of South Carolina Anatomical Gift Program for medical science research and teaching. He also requested that given the current health crisis facing our nation, state and local community, that a gathering for a funeral or memorial service not be held. While the Moody family would love to be surrounded by your presence, they acknowledge the health risks to family, church members, friends, and particularly to those who are most vulnerable to this virus, the elderly and those with chronic health conditions. What the family needs most at this time are your prayers and understanding. To honor the consummate and compassionate care Curtis always received from the Roper St. Francis Hospital and Healthcare Network professionals, the family requests that those wishing to honor his memory please make a donation in his name to the Roper St. Francis Foundation, 125 Doughty Street, Suite 790, Charleston, SC 29403.
