Creighton Likes Obituary

Creighton Edward Likes, Jr. Charleston - Creighton Edward Likes, Jr. entered into eternal life on Saturday, November 27, 2021, at the age of 79. Creighton was born on September 7, 1942, in Charleston, SC, son of Fannie Belle Beckmann Likes and Brigadier General Creighton Edward Likes. He grew up in the Hampton Park area, was schooled in Charleston, became an Eagle Scout and graduated from Rivers High School in 1960. Creighton attended Presbyterian College where he was a member of Kappa Alpha Order and ROTC. He graduated in 1964. Following graduation, Creighton became a member of the Medical Service Corps and served in the Army 2nd Infantry Division in Korea. When he returned to Charleston in 1967, Creighton married Constance Diane Young at Second Presbyterian Church, his family church. He then continued his service to our country for two years as an Active Reservist and completed his service with the rank of Captain. In 1968, Creighton went to work at the Medical University of South Carolina before going on to graduate school in the fall of 1970 at the Medical College of Virginia (now VCU). He received a Masters of Healthcare Administration in 1972 and promptly began a long and successful career in Hospital Administration. Creighton spent many years with the Hospital Corporation of America including serving as a District Vice President. He returned to his beloved Charleston in 1991 to assume the role of CEO at Bon Secours/St. Francis Xavier Hospital, where he worked tirelessly to gain the Certificate of Need to move the hospital to its current West Ashley location. During his tenure at St. Francis, Creighton also served as President of the South Carolina Hospital Association. Creighton was then called to the town of Lancaster, OH, to serve as CEO of Fairfield Medical Center, a position he treasured. He had so many fond memories of those with whom he had the pleasure of working. He was forever grateful for how the community embraced a Southerner. In 2001, Creighton returned to Charleston for good to lead Roper Hospital, where he served as CEO until his retirement. Creighton was a past member of the Washington Light Infantry and the German Friendly Society. He is survived by his wife, Constance Young Likes; his daughter, Chrissy Likes Zollweg (Josh); and his son, Dr. Creighton Edward Likes III (Christa). He is also survived by five grandchildren, his greatest joys in life: Jack, Lily, Carter, Creighton IV and Britton. Creighton was predeceased by his parents and two sisters: Harriet Ann Likes and Frances Likes Fayssoux. His funeral services will be held on Thursday, December 2, 2021, in Second Presbyterian Church, 342 Meeting Street, at 1:00 p.m. The family will receive friends Wednesday, December 1, 2021, in J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Downtown Chapel, 232 Calhoun Street, from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. Burial will be private. A kind and caring man. Always willing to take the time to listen to lend a hearing ear. I had the pleasure of having him as my administrator many years ago at Leesburg regional hospital in Florida.
My condolences to his family.

Dear Connie. It´s March 14, 2023 and I´m working with scrapbooks & pictures. I saved a Christmas card picturing your little son Creighton III & your daughter Chrissy. I went on-line to see where you might be today and saw your husband´s obituary of 2021. I was very sorry for your personal loss, that of your extended family & the entire Charleston community. You made me feel like an adopted Charlestonian & I continue to feel that way. I live in WestchesterCounty, NY and have since 1973. I would be very pleased to reunite with you. My email is [email protected], I live at 26 Oak Road, Briarcliff Manor, NY. My cell phone is 914-671-9599. Your note on the back of the card says "let us hear from you, Love, Connie." It would be wonderful to hear from YOU again. Love, Karen

I am so sorry to hear of Creighton's passing. I met your family through Harriet when we were working together until her retirement. She loved your family so much. Harriet frequently and proudly spoke of her brother and his accomplishments. I hope your many wonderful memories of Creighton will bring you comfort during this difficult time. Your family is in my thoughts and prayers.

With Deepest Sympathy,

Debbie Hanna

Mr. Creighton Likes was a long-time friend and personal hero of mine. He had a light that shone brighter than anyone I have ever known. He planted seeds of hope in people struggling with hopelessness. He went above and beyond to give me, personally, a path to a higher education and the courage to dream of a better life when I was becoming a man on the brink of despair. I will always be grateful for having had the honor, privilege, and immense joy of calling him my friend and mentor. God Bless You, Mr. Likes. May your light shine on forever.
