Constance Pultz Obituary

Constance Rose Pultz MT. PLEASANT - Constance Rose Pultz, of Mt. Pleasant, SC, and former resident of the Confederate Home, passed away on Friday, February 12, 2010 at the Hospice Center of Charleston. A memorial service for Constance Pultz will be held at St. Philip's Episcopal Church, Charleston, SC on Thursday, February 18, 2010 at 11:00 am. Burial will follow in the St. Philip's Episcopal Churchyard. ARRANGEMENTS by J. HENRY STUHR, INC., MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL. Constance Pultz, only child of Willa and Renwick Pultz, was born in Yonkers, NY, on December 4, 1913, raised on the South Shore of Long Island, and moved to Charleston in 1979 after retiring from American President Lines, a steamship company. She was a widely published author of short stories and poetry and was working on two novels at the time of her death. Her short stories appeared in "The Saturday Evening Post, Seventeen, and Mademoiselle," one of which was collected in an anthology and hailed by the New York Times as a "flawless short story." Her poems were published in numerous national journals and anthologized in several collections including "Southern Poetry Review, The Gettysburg Review, The Christian Science Monitor, Western Journal of Medicine, Kalliope, The Kennesaw Review, The Devil's Millhopper, and Charleston Magazine". She is the author of the poetry chapbooks, "The Biggest Mall in the World" (1994) and "Still Life with Moving Figures" (1995) as well as winner of scores of poetry competitions held by the Poetry Society of South Carolina and the Poetry Society of Georgia. She was active as a member of the Board of the Poetry Society of South Carolina and editor of its annual publication, "The Yearbook". For several decades until her death she was the moderator of the Writers' Group, a poetry critique group that meets monthly. Her genuine dedication to help and mentor writers, coupled with her fondness for the written word, respect for precision, and knowledge of poetry both challenged and benefited writers at all levels and of all ages including high school students. A voracious reader, Constance enjoyed erudite conversations about a wide variety of topics, always from a considered and well-informed point of view. In recognition of her long and distinguished association with the Poetry Society of South Carolina, a competition was established in her honor in 2006. Constance requested that friends so inclined could make contributions in her name to either the Poetry Society of South Carolina, PO Box 1090, Charleston, SC 29402 or to the Hospice of Charleston Foundation, 676 Wando Park Blvd, Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464. A message may be written in her memory by visiting our website at www.jhenrystuhr.com Visit our guestbook at www.postandcourier.com/deaths
