Clyde Metz Obituary

Clyde Raymond Metz ST. AUGUSTINE, FL - On the 6th of May, Clyde Raymond Metz died of natural causes. Clyde was 83 years old. Clyde was born in Gary, IN May 1940 to Robert and Josephine Metz. He lived his childhood years in Hobart, IN. He met his future wife Jennie Ann Speer Metz in junior high. They married in April 1961. He graduated from Rose Hulman Institute of Technology in 1962 and has a Doctor of Philosophy degree in physical chemistry from Indiana University. Clyde taught Chemistry at Indiana University-Purdue University in Indianapolis until 1982. He then joined the faculty of the College of Charleston in Charleston, SC. He was a coauthor of a general chemistry textbook and related laboratory materials, solution manuals, and study guides and has published several student research papers. He was active in the Division of Chemical Education of the American Chemical Society, was a member of the Electrochemical Society, Alpha Chi Sigma, Sigma Xi, Tau Beta Pi Phi Lambda Upsilon and the South Carolina Academy of Science. He was a fellow of the Indiana Academy of science. He was an active volunteer with the Boy Scouts of America in Indianapolis and Charleston. He was a scoutmaster for many years in Indianapolis. He was awarded the Silver Beaver award by the Coastal Carolina Council in Charleston. He was a member of the United Methodist Church. Clyde spent the last years of his life surrounded by loving family in St. Augustine, FL. He is survived by his wife, Jennie Ann Speer Metz. He is also survived by his children, Curtis (Sharon) and Shelley (Timmothy), his grandchildren, Alexis, Cameron, Sydney and Claire. He is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Philip and Marcia Speer and their children, Kathryn and Kevin (Kimberly) and their children, Stephanie, Eric and Cole. He is predeceased by his daughter, Lianne Debra Metz. Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Boy Scouts of America. Dr Metz was an outstanding professor of physical chemistry at the College of Charleston I was honored to be one of his students. He authored the textbook that we used. He was an excellent professor!
