Clifford Robertson Obituary

Clifford Parker Robertson, III WATER MILL, NY - Clifford Parker Robertson, III, passed away on September 10, died at the age of 88. He was a loving father, devoted friend, dedicated professional and honorable man. He stood by his family, friends, and colleagues through good times and bad. He made a difference in all our lives and made our world a better place. We will all miss him terribly. He was the loving father of Stephanie Robertson Saunders and her husband Donald. He was a cherished grandfather of Cynthia Jackson Saunders. He predeceased by his daughter Heather Merriweather Robertson. In addition he was also loved by Christopher Boyd Lemmon, Stephanie's half- brother. Cliff was the only actor to have won the Academy Award (Oscar), the Emmy Award (Best Actor, T.V.), and the Theater World Award (Stage), as well as the Advertising Age Award (Best T.V. Commercial). A true renaissance man, Cliff's acting, writing, and directing skills have been applauded on T.V., stage and in over seventy motion pictures. Cliff was personally chosen by John F. Kennedy to portray the president in the motion picture P.T. 109 - the story of Kennedy's heroic World War II exploits as a P.T. Boat skipper. It was followed by many award-winning performances in motion pictures, T.V., and Broadway. He supplemented his big screen work with roles on television, including the lead male role in the original prize-winning Days of Wine and Roses on Playhouse 90. Cliff showed his remarkable versatility as the star of Samuel Fuller's acclaimed Underworld U.S.A. He gave one of his finest performances in Gore Vidal's Pulitzer Prize-winning The Best Man, opposite Henry Fonda. He starred in the outstanding 633 Squadron; in the Devil's Brigade, opposite William Holden; and as a modern-day Mosca, opposite Rex Harrision in Joseph L. Mankiewicz's updated version of Jonson's Volpone, The Honey Pot. His brilliant performance as a mentally retarded man in Charly earned him the Academy Award for Best Actor. That critical success was followed by the Emmy Award for Best TV Actor in the drama, The Game. Returning to films, he then starred in Too Late The Hero opposite Michael Caine, The Great Northfield Minnesota Raid opposite Robert Duval, Three Days of the Condor opposite Robert Redford, and Obsession with Genevive Bujold. He also starred in, directed and wrote the acclaimed rodeo drama J.W. Coop, and directed and starred in The Pilot. Other films include Star 80, Escape From L.A., Spiderman 1 and 2, and Stephen King's Riding the Bullet. A Funeral service will be held on Friday, September 16th at 5:30 PM at St. Lukes Episcopal Church in East Hampton, NY. Burial with full Military Honors at Cedar Lawn Cemetery in East Hampton. I met Cliff when I first moved to LA. He was friends with my neighbor. We had dinner together. He was the nicest and coolest Man I ever met. He drove an old 1970s Ford Station Wagon with wood on the side. I think about him often and have the fondest memories of him as do so many others he came in contact with. So happy I got to know you

I'm glad I found this site. I have been wanting to say something about Mr. Robertson's passing for awhile, but did not know where I could communicate what I experienced in a dream concerning my father and Cliff. I am a genealogist for my family and I did find a link to my family and his. One morning about 4 am I was asleep and saw my father and Cliff smiling and talking to one another. They turned around and smiled at me and I knew absolutely that we were cousins. Thanks guys for letting me know. I miss both of them and know absolutely we will meet some day.

We carry the people we've loved through film in a special place in our hearts. They take a piece of themselves and a page of script, and give birth to someone new: a joint creation between actor and audience. A personalized gift given only to us, for which our grief is unique and profound.
Thank you very much. You are so greatly missed.

Daniel Keyes, author of "Flowers for Algernon" passed on just the other day. It reminded me of something.

I just retired from 42 years working as the building supervisor at Hillman Library, University of Pittsburgh. One memory that remains fresh is one day in the mid to late 1970s, someone said, hey, isn't that the actor sitting over there across the floor (ground floor in Hillman)? I looked over and knew who it was, Cliff Robertson, I said, in Pittsburgh for something (haven't been able to discover what). I did not want to bother him, but did have to walk over past him to pin down that it was truly him, and it was. I had viewed "Charly" (interpretation of the book "Flowers for Algernon") and it is still with me more than half a century later. I was young then, and did not realize the importance we have for each other, whether movie star or library staff, otherwise I would have done what I would do now, share my appreciation of his gift. I am absolutely positive that Cliff is doing just fine in spirit, and he certainly has my full appreciation. He had such a great voice, as well.

I was saddened to hear that the wonderful Cliff Robertson has passed away. As a child of the 60's I grew up watching his movies. I loved that he made every motion picture so special with his presence and believeablity, as in the fantastic movies Obsession, Charlie, Brainstorm and the list goes on. There was a real gentleman behind those handsome eyes that was pure class. Bravo Mr. Robertson for all the years of joy and entertainment you gave to all your fans in film. My heart goes out to his family at this very sad time of loss. Blessings to you all.

I was a small child and I remember him and the movie crew filming some scenes across the street from my house in South Boston Ma for the movie Charly. I remember clearly a line from the movie exclaiming, "I made it I made it". And some of my friends and I yelled back....he made it he made it. He and the rest of the crew and crowd laughed at that and I remembered thinking later that here was a guy who was not all caught up in himself and could laugh easily. Too bad there aren't more like him left.

Cliff Robertson has been one of my favorite actors since I was 12 years old in 1981 right after I saw Gidget. As the Big Kahuna, I thought he was such a great actor and his presence in the film was the highlight. Since then, I have followed his career and have watched many of his from the 50s, 60s, and 70s including Picnic, Autumn Leaves, Charly, PT 109, Three Days of the Condor, Obsession, Masquerade, two of the best episodes of the Twilight Zone (The Dummy, and One Hundred Yards Over the Rim) and so much more. I am so sad to hear he passed away. He will always have a place in my heart forever for being such a great and talented actor and for being one of the most handsome men in the film industry. RIP Mr. Robertson.

I grew up in the 60s and Mr. Robertson's role in CHARLY inspired me to view the mentally challenged in a very different and postive way. I enjoyed all of his performances in the movies as he was a gifted actor. My regards to his family on this loss, but I am glad it was a peaceful passing for a gift and talented man.

I was in my 20's (early 1970's) and was driving from Southampton back to Hampton Bays at about 2:00 am one morning (coming back from from a club). There was not a car on the road back then and barreling down the road towards me came this speeding convertible with an attractive guy driving. I looked over and it was Cliff Robertson! He was so handsome! He was a great actor and BIGGER THAN LIFE! He always seemed like a regular guy on all the talk shows whenever he was interviewed. He never seemed impressed with himself. A real gentleman. He has a lot of fans and will be missed!

I met Cliff in 1989 where I worked at AT&T Bell Labs. I mentioned his Oscar but that I really enjoyed him as villian Shame on the Batman TV show. He laughed and told me that when he is asked about his most enjoyable role, this was it. He said it was so much fun and was even quoting some of the lines to me. I had my picture taken with him and he autographed a photo for me (which I have framed on the wall). To Jerry, Cliff Robertson and he added "Shame" below. What a nice man. I will never forget our meeting and will miss him.

"Did Cliff Robertson also star in the night sitcom of "Falcon Crest" for 1 or 2 seasons. First time I had saw him for years, but he left all of a sudden, was killed off at the start of a new season without explanation. Maybe illness prevented him from coming back. Despite the bad reviews I loved him in JFK.
