Cleveland Hiott Obituary

Cleveland Columbus "Cole" Hiott, IV ROUND O, SC - Cleveland Columbus "Cole" Hiott IV passed away Wednesday, July 27, 2016, in the Pisgah National Forest of North Carolina while hiking with close friends and camp counselors of Camp Ridgecrest for Boys. He was 18. Cole was born February 24, 1998, a son of Cleveland C. Hiott III and Lydia Givens Hiott. Cole was a student for most of his life at Pinewood Preparatory Academy in Summerville. Cleveland attended his beloved Ashley Ridge High School, where he was a rising senior and was active in the Drama Club. For many years Cole had attended the Ridgecrest Camp for Boys at Black Mountain, NC and had created many friendships that he cherished and never took for granted. He was a wonderful son and brother, and he possessed an incredible sense of humor...always able to lift the spirits of those around him. He enjoyed spending time outdoors in the mountains of North Carolina, and on the family farm in Round O, absorbing the beauty of God's creations. He was a member of the Bethlehem Baptist Church, where he was active in the youth group. He will truly be missed by all who knew him. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his brother, John B. Hiott of Round O. He has an aunt, Gail Givens of Waterville, Maine, a great-aunt, Miriam Hiott Beach, and a host of cousins and extended family. Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning at 10:00 in the First Baptist Church of Walterboro, with burial following in the Live Oak Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6-8 PM at Parker-Rhoden Funeral Home of Walterboro. Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to the Ridgecrest Camp for Boys Scholarship Fund, P.O.B. 279, Ridgecrest, NC 28770. Visit our guestbook at www.legacy.com/obituaries/ charleston

I am sitting here this Christmas Eve missing Cole tremendously. Rereading these kind and heartfelt words has helped to sooth my soul. Shane, yes, I have seen your message and it means a great deal to me. To everyone who loved and misses Cole the way I do, I pray for blessings this Christmas season.

I was friends with Cleveland in high school. We had piano class together my first year at Ashley Ridge. I don't remember how or why we started talking, maybe we sat near each other, but I do remember him being funny and we liked a lot of the same things. We both enjoyed video games and anime and we would learn songs from games and shows in our piano class when we had free time. We'd send each other memes and/or any game/anime related things.

I think we stopped talking as much my second year of high school, we didn't have any of the same classes and he was a grade above me, but we would still chat when we did see each other. I stopped talking to a lot of people around that time, I was afraid to interact with my friends because I was always anxious. He still would send me things online though, which I appreciated.

When I heard the news of his passing I quite honestly couldn't believe it. It didn't seem possible to me. I had never lost someone before. I checked back on his Facebook every day for about a week thinking maybe it would change, that it wasn't real, but the reality eventually set in. I realized that I can't take anyone or anything for granted in this life. I've made it a point since then to always be kind like him and go through life with gratitude for the people I have around me.

It's hard to believe that it's been 8 years now. I think about him every now and then, which is why I felt the need to write this here, so that if someone happens to look, they'll also think of him today. He was kind to everyone and he accepted people as they were. He liked Gurren Lagann and The Legend of Zelda.

To Cleveland's family, my thoughts are with you and I want to say how grateful I am to have known Cleveland. His parent's raised an amazing person who still lives on in the hearts of his friends and family.

Lydia, I am so deeply sorry for your loss. The loss of a child is something so painful that no one can understand unless they have been through it themselves. Unfortunately I have also been through this as my son passed away 18 months ago. I sent you a message via Facebook with my phone number please reach out - perhaps there is something I can do to help you. My heart aches for you because I know how much your heart is aching

Our thoughts and prayers have been with your family over the past days. Our son, an Arapaho this year at Ridgecrest during the same session as Cole, met Cole last year and spoke very fondly of him. Our hearts broke for your family, when we received the news. We will continue to pray for the peace, comfort and the strength of the Lord to fill you each in the days, weeks and months ahead.

It was such an honor to know Cole. We were together in cabin in the Arap 2015, my first year as a camper. We were so excited to see each other and our reunion was special.
