Clarence Thornburg Obituary

Clarence Floyd Thornburg, 91, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of service and love.

Clarence was born on April 3, 1934, in Gaston County, North Carolina, to the late Eugene Thornburg and Ethel Smith Thornburg. He devoted an extraordinary 41 years of service to the United States Air Force, serving his country with honor and distinction. During his military career, Clarence served in Vietnam and many other stations across the country. He loved his country and carried that pride with him throughout his life. In recognition of his service and commitment, he was also an honorary member of the 82nd Airborne. Clarence shared 59 loving years of marriage with his devoted wife, Margaret Ann Thornburg. Known for his outgoing nature and infectious personality, Clarence was truly the life of the party. He never met a stranger and had a rare gift for making everyone around him feel welcome.

He is survived by his loving wife, Margaret Ann Thornburg; his granddaughter, Stacy Lynn Autrey (Jared); as well as his great grandchildren: Jack and Olivia Autrey. He was preceded in death by his stepchildren: John M. Koonce and Steven A. Koonce; his siblings: Eugene Thornburg, Lorraine Bell, and Jack Thornburg; as well as his parents.

A gathering of family and friends will be held on Saturday, January 10, 2026, from 12pm to 1pm at James A. Dyal Funeral Home. The memorial service will begin at 1:00pm in the Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to The Wounded Warriors Foundation or Tunnels to Towers.
