Clara DeVane Obituary

DeVANE, Clara Clara Neil Brady DeVane passed peacefully on March 9, 2009 at the age of 94 in Mt. Pleasant, SC. The widow of Bizzell Carl DeVane, she lived the majority of her life in Fairmont, NC. A reserved and gracious lady, she will be greatly missed by all her family and friends. Graveside service Thursday, March 12, 2009 in Fairmont, NC. Mrs. DeVane was born at Smith's Siding near St. Pauls, NC in Robeson County on Feb. 9, 1915 to Flora Ann Ray and William Lee Brady. She married Carl DeVane, March 15, 1944, and lived with her husband in Salt Lake City as he served in the Army. They made their permanent home in Fairmont where they owned and operated DeVane Lumber Company until his death in 1986. Mrs. DeVane was an active member of her community, especially enjoying gardening and bridge. She was a tireless worker in the First Presbyterian Church holding many offices, and was given Honorary Life Membership in Presbyterian Women in 1987. She is the beloved mother of Dr. C. Lindsay DeVane (Terri) and beloved grandmother of Jonathan L. DeVane of Mt. Pleasant, SC and of V. Caroline Brady DeVane of Evanston, IL. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 606 Church Street, Fairmont, NC 28340. Arrangements by MCALISTER-SMITH FUNERAL HOME, MT. PLEASANT CHAPEL, (843) 884-3833.
