Christina Homer Obituary

Christina George Savvas Homer Charleston - Christina George Savvas Homer, 82, of Charleston, SC widow of Arthur "Art" S. Homer entered into eternal rest Monday, July 18, 2016. Her funeral service will be held Wednesday, July 20, 2016 in the Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity, 30 Race Street at 12:00 p.m. Interment, Live Oak Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. in the Greek Orthodox Church with Trisagion beginning at 6:00 p.m. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR, INC. DOWNTOWN CHAPEL. Christina was born in the old Baker Hospital on January 6, 1934. Her parents were Greek immigrants, George T. Savvas (Savvopoulos) of Vachlia, Gortynias and Alexandra Savvas (nee Panopoulou) of Monastiraki, Gortynias Greece. She was married to Arthur S. Homer for 28 years until his death in 1986. Christina grew up on King Street in Charleston with strong roots in the Greek Church and Charleston Community. She attended Courtenay Elementary School, Rivers Middle School and the High School of Charleston where she was a standout athlete. Her basketball jersey was retired upon her graduation. Christina graduated from Coker College with a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education and went on to teach and coach. Christina made a name for herself coaching basketball and track at Moultrie High School in Mt. Pleasant and later at Garrett High School in North Charleston, winning countless tournaments and titles. Later she joined her husband Art in the liquor business where she worked until her retirement until 2007. Christina was a highly involved member of the Greek Orthodox Church of Charleston and its auxiliaries such as the Maids of Athena, Daughters of Penelope Velonaki, and the St. Irene's Ladies Philoptochos Society of Charleston, where she was a past president. Christina was best known for her fund-raising works on behalf of the church's philanthropic efforts. She taught Hellenic folk dancing and coached basketball to the Greek youth for several decades. This year Christina will be honored by His Eminence Metropolitan Alexios with the Archangel Michael Award for a lifetime of work with the Church. She always looked forward to her Monday afternoon card group with her lifelong friends. Christina never met a dog she didn't love and enjoyed the daily stroll around her beloved Colonial Lake. "Yia Yia" was the rock of the family and is survived by her daughter Alexis H. Glover (Cregg) of Mt. Pleasant; daughter Georgia H. Darby (John) of Mt. Pleasant; her son Demetre Homer of Charleston and six beloved grandchildren who were the undeniable lights of her life: JC Darby, Christina Glover, Arthur Darby, Alexander Glover, Litsa Darby and Andrew Glover. She will remain in the hearts of her family forever. May her memory be eternal. Memorials may be made to Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity Endowment Fund, 30 Race Street, Charleston, SC 29403 or to the Charleston Animal Society, 2455 Remount Road, N. Just returned from out of town and was so sorry to learn of the passing of your sweet mother and grandmother. Deepest sympathy to the entire extended Homer family. Mrs. Homer taught me P. E., Health, and Physical Science at Garrett High School when I was in the eighth grade. What a turn of events when Alexis taught all four of my children P. E. at Wando High School. I enjoyed seeing Mrs. Homer at certain events over the years and we always enjoyed talking. She will be missed by all who ever had the pleasure of knowing her.

Deme, Alexis, Georgia and family,
We don't know a world without Christine Homer...but, what a beautiful mark she has left in our lives. We will all cherish the many memories we've made with her and your family over the years. Thea Christine was like a second mama to Peter and me, and we have wonderful memories of her at your house after school, visiting with her at "The Tavern" and enjoying special occasions. She will be greatly missed, far and wide, but what an incredible legacy she has left. No one truly loved and lost is ever really gone. A part of her remains in all of you. I smile when I think that she is with Theo Art now, her mom and dad and others... (and Boulie, her other love). Thank you for sharing your mom with us all. May her memory be eternal. ~Michelle, Rip, Lauren & Allison Ruopoli, and Peter Demetre

I took a strong liking to Christina when I first met her in about 1990, and began to go look forward to stopping by her store whenever I needed a bottle of wine or whiskey. Often going a bit out of the way; like from the airport to Kiawah Island. She seemed to have the unique combination of no-nonsense a personality and a wonderful sense of humor.

I wish I had known what a great basketball player she was, I certainly would have challenged her to a game of horse (and probably lost).

We will all miss her dearly, and will keep her family and friends in our thoughts and prayers,

We are very sorry to hear about Ms. Homer's passing and her loss will be felt. We are so glad that she handled our wedding (and I imagine so many more) and she always made me feel welcome in the church and community. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Homer, Glover, and Darby families and the extended family and friends that all good Greek families have. My kids will miss the sweets she always passed them at church. Zoi s' mas
