Cheryl Jean Vaughn SUMMERVILLE - Cheryl Jean (Ohrt) Vaughn, RN, CNM, born on April 15, 1944 in Waterloo, Iowa, entered into eternal rest at the age of 71 on May 5, 2015 at home in Summerville surrounded by her family. She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 50 years, Jack Vaughn, who served as her primary caregiver for many years; daughter, Rebecca (Becky) Olsen of Charleston, SC, and son, Jason Vaughn and his wife, Jamye of Jacksonville, FL. Her greatest joys called her "Granny" and include four grandchildren, Shelby and Andrew (Olsen) of Charleston, SC and Josh and Pyper (Vaughn) of Jacksonville, FL. She was predeceased by her parents, Dale and Helene Ohrt. Cheryl spent her 44-year-long career caring for others. After receiving her nursing degree in 1965 from the Allen Memorial Lutheran School of Nursing in Waterloo, Iowa, she went on to work in labor and delivery units at various hospitals, rural health clinics and private physician practices. In 1992, she completed the Nurse Midwifery Program at the State University of New York. Credited with delivering over 300 infants and providing obstetrical and gynelogical care to women in underserved rural communities, she was passionate about women's health and the art of natural childbirth. In 2009, she retired from the South Carolina Department of Health & Environmental Control. Her family wishes to especially thank Elisha Brownfield, MD, John Plyler, MD, Rev. Will Dietrich, Rev. Todd Sutton and members of Peace Presbyterian Church and the physicians, nurses and support staff of Amedisys Hospice of South Carolina. All played a vital and important role in providing care and support throughout her long and courageous battle with dementia. Funeral service will be held at Peace Presbyterian Church, 174 Londonderry Rd, Goose Creek, SC 29445 on Saturday, May 9, 2015 at 11:00 AM with Rev. Todd Sutton officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 10:00 AM until the hour of service. Mr. Jack and family, you all are in our prayers! I worked with Cheryl for many years at DHEC. She taught me so much working as a nurse in Family planning. She touched the lives of all that she met. May God bless and comfort you all.
