Charlotte Westendorff Obituary

Charlotte R. Westendorff ASHEVILLE, NC - Charlotte Roempke Westendorff, 83, died peacefully at home on Dec. 23, 2014. Charlotte was born in Charleston, SC in 1931 to Carla and Louis J. Roempke. She had two sisters, Jean and Mary and a brother, Louis. Charlotte spent most of her long life in Charleston. She attended Bishop England High School and the College of Charleston where she was a Chi Omega. It was there that she met Clarence Westendorff, Jr., or "Sonny", and the two lovebirds married at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, in Charleston, SC, in 1952. For Charlotte, married life was busy and fun. She had her first two children, Karen and Kevin, in Norfolk, VA while living at the naval base there. From there the little yet growing family moved to Clemson, SC where 2 more children, David and Robbie, were born. From Clemson they moved to Oak Ridge, TN, and had 2 more children, Polly and Peter. Finally, the travelers returned to Charleston and had the last 2 of their 8 children-Mark and Meg. Charlotte was a long-time parishioner at Christ Our King Church, where she volunteered with the Saint Vincent de Paul Society for many years. Charlotte was also a long-time member of the Groves Garden Club. She was one of the original team of Volunteers who started East Cooper Community Outreach after Hurricane Hugo. This was one of the accomplishments Charlotte was the most proud of. She saw ECCO through many changes and much growth, and "retired" after 20 years of devoted service. Charlotte was predeceased by her parents, husband, Clarence Westendorff, Jr., her brother, Louis and sister, Jean. She is survived by her sister, Mary Barwick of Montgomery, AL., all 8 of her children including Karen Villeponteaux (Jay) of Harleyville, Kevin Westendorff (Suzanne) of Mt. Pleasant, David Westendorff (Wang Lin) of Shanghai, China, Robert Westendorff of Mt. Pleasant, Polly McElwee (Tom) of Mt. Pleasant, Peter Westendorff (Lani) of Winchester, VA, Mark Westendorff (Rebecca) of Wilmington, NC and Meg Winnecour (Josh) of Asheville, NC, 14 grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren (and one more on the way!). Her funeral mass will be held at 11am on Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2014 at Christ Our King Catholic Church. Charlotte requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to her beloved ECCO. 1145 6 Mile Rd., Mt. Pleasant, SC 29466. Visit our guestbook at www.legacy.com/obituaries/ charleston

I was so upset when I read your mother passed away; yet, am very thankful I was able to have a relationship with her, your father, and your kind family if only for a short time. I think about Clarence and Charlotte often and sincerely hope they are both at peace with each other (the two lovebirds!). Love, Marisa

Hi Cousins, sorry for the loss of your dear mother. Many happy childhood memories of visiting with you all on our annual visits to Charleston. Mom and I were able to visit with your parents shortly after Dad died in 1999. We had a wonderful dinner with them. Know that you all are in my thoughts and prayers. May her soul and all the souls of the faithful departed rest in peace.
