Charlotte Libater Obituary

Charlotte Fern Portugal Libater CHARLESTON - Entered into eternal rest and returned to her creator, the Lord, Hashem, on Sunday morning, September 28, 2014 (5775), Charlotte Fern Portugal Libater, widow of Samuel A. Libater. Her graveside funeral service will be held Wednesday, October 1, 2014, in Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim Cemetery, Huguenin Avenue, at 11:00 a.m. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. in J. HENRY STUHR, INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL. Charlotte was born March 13, 1919 in Johnstown, PA, daughter of the late Abraham Isaac Portugal and the late Freda Denawetz Portugal. She grew up in Pittsburgh, PA. She was of the Jewish religion and was a member of Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim Temple. Charlotte was a retired branch secretary for Southwestern Life Insurance Company. She was a past member of the Board of Trustees and a past president of the Jewish War Veterans Auxiliary. Charlotte was a member and past president of Shepherd's Center when they met at First (Scots) Presbyterian Church. She was a long time member of The Temple Choir, later Koleinu at Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim Temple. She also sang with the Southern Harmony (Charleston) Chapter of Sweet Adelines. Charlotte sang with the Jewish Choral Society of Charleston for about 9 or 10 years beginning with its inception in 1999. She had a very good attitude about life. Despite losing her mother at the age of 15, her father at the age of 22, and her husband at the age of 38, she stated, at about age 83, that she had had a good life. She is survived by her son, Lawrence M. Libater of Charleston, SC; her nieces, Freda Bluestone Birnbaum of New York City, NY and Hannah Bluestone Lieberman of Westfield, NJ; her nephews, David Bluestone of Centerville, MA, Gil Turchin of Ridgeland, MS and William Bluestone of Edison, NJ; her step-niece, Pat Smith of Keller, TX; her step-nephew, John N. Burtoft, Jr. of The Villages, FL; two adopted granddaughters, Alicia Carle and Rachel Carle; and three adopted great-granddaughters, Kayla Foster, Leah Carle and Marley Carle, all of Charleston, SC. She was preceded in death by her husband; her sisters, Ruth Portugal Bluestone, Eleanor M. Portugal; and her brother, Joel Portugal. Memorials may be made to Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim Temple, 90 Hasell Street, Charleston, SC 29401 or to the Charleston Interfaith Crisis Ministry, 573 Meeting Street, Charleston, SC 29403 or the religious institution of your choice. We are very sorry to learn of your dear mother's passing. Charlotte was one of the very first people we met upon our arrival in Charleston several years ago, and she always took a very kind interest in our family. We will miss her and hope your loving memories of this special lady bring comfort

Charlotte used to joke that she knew more Christmas songs than a Christian from singing with Southern Harmony Chorus. I have wonderful memories of her. I am so sorry for your loss, Larry
