Charlotte Cagle Obituary

Charlotte Howe Cagle MT. PLEASANT - "She walks lightly, yet with strength and dignity." Charlotte Howe Cagle, 91, has passed. Surrounded by her family on January 12, 2025, she comfortably slipped away at her home in Mt Pleasant, SC. Charlotte was married to Hugh B. Cagle, (deceased) her husband of 52 years. She is survived by her two children: Leigh and husband, Michael Cladakis, and their son, Nicholas (Nick) of Mt. Pleasant, SC; and Hugh Bethune, Jr. (Hank) and wife, Allison Cagle, and their daughter, Annice Beatrice (Annie) also of Mt. Pleasant, SC. Charlotte was born on March 13, 1933, to Mary Elizabeth Orpin and Coit Sparrow Howe. She and her two older sisters, Phyllis H. Hallman and Sylvia H. Grissom were raised in Gastonia, NC, in a large family of aunts, uncles, and many cousins, all centered around the family dairy and Olney Presbyterian Church. That childhood experience instilled in Charlotte a lifelong passion for family, friends, and faith that she nurtured in every community she lived in throughout her life. She graduated from Peace College where she received the "Outstanding Senior Award" and was named to "Who's Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities." She worked for two years as a secretary until her father's illness brought her back to Gastonia to help her mother. During this time she met and married her husband, Hugh. Charlotte and Hugh moved to Greensboro, NC, where she worked as a secretary and raised their children. She spent 30-plus years as an active member of Guilford Park Presbyterian Church. Charlotte sang in the choir, worked in the nursery, taught Sunday School, served as an elder, chaired many committees, and was presented with an Honorary Life Membership from the Presbyterian Women. She moved to Mt. Pleasant in 2012 to be with her children and grandchildren. Her front porch quickly became a meeting place for her many new friends within the Fox Pond community of the Old Village. She loved her neighbors! A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 18, 2025, at Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church, 302 Hibben St., Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464, at 1:00 pm. Following the service, the family will receive friends at The Wreck of The Richard & Charlene, 106 Haddrell St., Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464. The family is being served by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Mt. Pleasant. A memorial message may be sent to the family on our website at www.jhenrystuhr.com.

Fox Pond neighborhood will NEVER be the same without the Southern Ambassador, Ms. Charlotte. Gosh, she was such a treasure. Whether walking, driving, biking, etc., you could count on her lovely smile on her porch. She was kind, friendly, and God truly blessed her with a beautiful soul. Heaven has gained a beautiful angel. Thank you for always being kind to my daughter and grandchildren, who lived a few houses away. They adored Ms. Charlotte!

I will always remember Charlotte as the sweet lady who gave my son cookies and crackers from her desk drawer when we visited Resco. Charlotte worked many years with my father, Bunkey Derushia and Nick would always get treats from her desk just for coming to visit. He would always run to her desk and know the exact drawer to open. When she didn't have anything, she would go to the snack box in their kitchen area and buy him something. What a sweet lady she was! Please accept my condolences on her passing.

Leigh & Hank, so sorry to hear this news today about Charlotte. She was such wonderful Southern lady. I enjoyed the years I worked with her at North State Pyrophyllite & the visits Laura & I have had on her front porch when visiting Charleston. Our deepest condolences to you both.

Leigh and Hank, we are so sad to read this today. Charlotte was a sweet Southern Lady loved by everyone. I enjoyed the years we worked together at North State/Resco, there are so many sweet and humorous memories. I'm glad she moved to Mt. Pleasant to be near the ones she loved most.
