Charles Williams Obituary

Charles deVineau Williams MT. PLEASANT -Charles deVineau Williams, 78, of Mt. Pleasant, husband of Demetra Toula Philipps Williams, entered into eternal rest Tuesday, July 11, 2023.
His funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Monday, July 17, 2023, at the Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity, 30 Race St., Charleston. Entombment will follow in Mt. Pleasant Memorial Gardens, 1308 Mathis Ferry Road, with a reception at the Mount Pleasant Chapel of J. Henry Stuhr Inc., 1494 Mathis Ferry Road. Charles was born Sept. 6, 1944 in Charleston, son of Charles Braxton Williams and Ruth deVineau Williams. He started as a sportswriter and retired as editor of The Post and Courier, where he created the paper's business section. In his retirement, he created and ran a digital newspaper, The Mt. Pleasant Journal.
Charles loved the Lowcountry and giving back to his community as a member of the Rotary Club and Elks Club, and as a soccer coach, who took teams to state championship multiple times. He was a member of the Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity.
Charles will be remembered for his perspective, great sense of humor, caring nature and natural storytelling ability – but mostly for the love he gave his family.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years; son, Braxton deVineau Williams (April); grandchild, Anne Lisette Williams; and sister, Patricia Owens.
Memorials may be made to the Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity Building Fund, 34 Race St., Charleston, SC 29403, www.gocharleston.org (http://www.gocharleston.org/).

Dear Toula and Braxton, I just learned of Charlie´s passing. I want to send you and your family my deepest support and love. It was an honor to work with him at the paper. He certainly helped me as a new reporter, and he changed my life for the better by encouraging me to apply for a Rotary Exchange to Brazil. Some of my best memories were of playing soccer with him and of coaching soccer with him in Mount Pleasant. Braxton, that was so much fun! Charlie was and is one of my best friends. Thank you for sharing him! Blessings to you and your family, Edward Marshall, Lexington, Kentucky

Charles was a bright light and literally a "lifeboat of comfort and hope" to me during some rather dark days...... beginning in 2016!! I will forever be grateful. I was a fan. Enjoyed SO much seeing him with my old friend (and former colleague) TOULA at our CHS reunions. Sending my love and heartfelt condolences to Toula and family. May God grant you all peace and comfort. RIP "Warrior" Charles
