Chuck was born in Fairmont, West Virginia, on December 6, 1942, to Charles F. and Doris Phillips Welty. He was preceded in death by his parents and his grandson, Cody Welty. Chuck is survived by his wife of 37 years, Ann Cooper Welty; his sons, Kevin Welty, Summerville, and Ben Welty, San Francisco; and his sister, ,Judy Ogden (Jim), Overland Park, KS. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Josh, Caroline, and Kayla Welty; his great-grandchildren, Madelyn and Chloe Welty, all of Summerville; and his niece, Amy Lawlor (Mark), Overland Park, KS. Chuck had a varied and decorated career in athletics and in education. As a high school student in West Virginia, he was an All State football player as well as a member of the All State Chorus (Who Knew). Chuck's higher formal education came as a West Virginia Mountaineer where he was the student athletic manager for the WVU basketball team before earning a BS degree in 1965. Upon graduation, Chuck worked as the Assistant Athletic Trainer at his Alma Mater while also pursuing a Masters degree. He later did post graduate work in Biomechanics and Traumatic Brain Injuries at The Citadel and MUSC. Beginning in 1967, Chuck served 24 years at The Baptist College at Charleston as it grew into Charleston Southern University. During this time, he held the positions of Athletic Trainer, Assistant Professor of Physical Education, Assistant Athletic Director, NCAA Compliance Director. He coached tennis, soccer, and basketball and started the Baptist College Club Football program in 1985 which grew into their current NCAA Division 1 program. He was inducted into the CSU Athletic Hall of Fame in 1992. Chuck continued his career in education at Fort Dorchester High School as a teacher, counselor, mentor, and confidante for twelve years. For his many contributions to his special needs students, he was recognized as Special Education Teacher of the Year in Dorchester County and as Teacher of the Year at his high school. Chuck loved his family and his community, as he was a resident of Summerville for over forty years. He was a friend to all and a mentor and guide to innumerable students whom he taught and led throughout his well-lived life. No one would be surprised if Chuck were organizing a billiard's tournament, conducting a seminar, or planning an after party right now. I remember Coach Welty from mu Baptist College years of 1968-70. He was a great guy to be around and I throughly enjoyed his classes and advice. Rest in peace Coach as you lived a great life and left a remarkable legacy.

Mr. Chuck was an amazing next door neighbor! He´d always ask about my day when getting off the bus from school. His smile was always the cherry on top of a hard day. You will be missed.

At a time like this I should say something profound but I find I can't articulate all of my feelings at once but I can share a story.

When I was 15 another member of Mr. Welty's class named Dan Grooms died. At the funeral Mr. Welty put his arm on my shoulder and said that the important thing to remember when someone died was to be there for those that were left behind. I have always tried to remember that.

I never knew him outside of his official capacity as an educator but he influenced me and many others who feel his absence and will for years to come.

My thoughts and prayers go to his family at this difficult time.

In 1985 I made the journey to Baptist College of Charleston to play for that club team the Coach Welty was involved in starting. I never would of guessed the impact that would have on my life. The experience and friendships that were created was incredible. The high expectations he had helped me develop a great work ethic. Although I did see his face turn beat red a few times, because of a few questionable decisions I made. I am sadden by his passing, but thankful I had him in my life. Rest in Peace Coach Welty.

A legend and icon at Baptist College/Charleston Southern University and to the community. I played on the club football team for 4 years in the late 80´s early 90´s and had a wonderful experience. Coach Welty coordinated the program from its infancy and laid out the foundation. I´m honored and humbled to have been a part of what he helped to build. Praying for friends and family as they celebrate and mourn this great man.
