Reverend Charles Launie Price

Charles Price Obituary

Reverend Charles Launie Price CHARLESTON - The Reverend Charles Launie Price, 90, resident of Charleston, SC, widower of Juddy Browning Price, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on June 13, 2022. Born June 25, 1931 in Columbia, SC, he was the son of the late Launie Clarence Price and Sara Magalis Price. He was a graduate of the University of South Carolina and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. Upon graduation, he became pastor of Varnville Baptist Church for 9 years. He then became a founder of the Baptist College at Charleston, (which later became Charleston Southern University), where he served as Vice President for Student Affairs. He is survived by his sister, Elisabeth Price of Clyde, NC; daughter, Donna Price Campbell and her husband, Tim, of Lexington; son, Barry Arden Price and his wife, Jae, of Charleston; four grandchildren: Price (Emilee) Campbell, Rebecca (Michael) Boyce, Morgan Price and Andrew Price; five great-grandchildren: Campbell, Samuel, Juliana and Timothy Boyce, and Charlee Campbell. He was blessed to have loved Jae's family and is survived by her children: Susan (Travis) Watson, Chandler Kniffen, and Davis Kniffen (Kristin Hunt); and her grandchildren: James, Kaleb and Lily Watson, Jonah and Hadleigh Kniffen, and Ariel Hunt. He was predeceased by his oldest daughter, Linda Price, and by his oldest granddaughter, Erin Hill Hebler. Charlie was blessed to have married his teenage sweetheart, Juddy, whom he met at age 15. Avid travelers, they enjoyed many vacations throughout the U.S., Canada, Alaska and especially enjoyed Europe. They moved to Columbia in their mid-life years and enjoyed the fellowship and worship at Park Street Baptist Church where they remained active for many years. Many friends there were near and dear to them. As a retiree, and with the help of his sister, Elisabeth, Charlie taught himself to play the piano. He had an extensive collection of music, and he and Juddy enjoyed playing back to back pianos for hours. His later years were sprinkled with enjoyment of simple things of life: a trip to the beach, oyster roasts, setting crab traps, seeing the eclipse, taking care of his cat, waving out the window to his great-grandchildren during the pandemic, reading the paper every day, a hot cup of coffee, and sending jokes in the mail. Charlie wore many hats, the hat of husband for 67 years to Juddy and then the hat of a faithful and loving caretaker as Juddy declined in health. He wore the hat of pastor, educator, teacher, and church leader. He wore the hat of businessman, investing and acquiring numerous parcels of real estate which required the hat of plumber, electrician, and carpenter for their maintenance. In his last days, he wore the hat of living in his memories and expressing a heart of gratitude for his family God had given to him. His statement of life was that he "didn't know of any family that was more blessed!" The family would like to express deep appreciation to Indigo Hall and Recovery Hospice for the patience and loving care they extended to Charlie during his stay there. "Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His godly ones." Psalm 116:15

Pastor Charlie Price was sent by God to my family when I was a teenager in Varnville. He spent hours with my father. I can see them now, standing in the yard, my father leaning against the car, as Pastor Price talked. Then, Daddy talked, and Charlie Price listened. He was so young, but his way of being had a powerful impact on my father who, eventually, became a deacon in the church and even taught Sunday School. May the memory of Charlie Price always be a blessing. May his family be comforted by the memory of his Christ- like deeds.

Donna and Barry, I sorry to learn of your father's passing. He was a good man who lived a Christian life and who shared his beliefs not only through sharing his words but also by his life and deeds. Your family is in my thoughts and prayers.
