Charles Minshew Obituary

MINSHEW, Charles CONWAY - Charles Chuck Tucker Minshew, age 78, of the Myrtle Trace South Community, died Friday, August 31, 2007, at Conway Medical Center. Mr. Minshew was born in Summerville, SC, a son of the late Oliver Grey and Marie Hanahan Minshew. He was a graduate of Clemson University and received a Masters Degree from the University of South Carolina. A Captain in the United States Army, he served in the Korean Conflict. He was President of the South Carolina Area Trade Schools, in West Columbia. Mr. Minshew served under Governor James B. Edwards as Director of the Manpower Division. After moving to Brunswick, GA, he designed and built the Brunswick Job Corps Center and served as its first Director. Relocating to Washington, D.C., Mr. Minshew served as the field operations coordinator, Manpower Division, for the National Association of Home Builders. Prior to his retirement, he was an Academic Dean at Horry-Georgetown Technical School. After retirement, he volunteered as the director of the Horry County Literacy Council. He and his brother Joe enjoyed rallying cross country in antique automobiles. In 1996, they won the Sportsman's Class in The Great American Race, an event which spanned the continent from Tacoma, Washington, to Toronto, Canada. Mr. Minshew was predeceased by two brothers, Joseph E. Minshew and Oliver Grey Minshew. Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Jane Ehrhardt Minshew; one daughter, Zana Roberts and her husband, Carl; two grandchildren, Brenden and Grey Roberts all of Columbia, SC; two brothers, Henry Minshew and his wife, Nell; Ralph Hanahan and his wife, Elizabeth, all of Charleston, SC; two sisters, Mary O'Neal and Grey Geissler both of Charleston, SC. A memorial service will be held at 4:00 PM Tuesday at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, where he was a member, with the Father Tripp Jeffords and Father Iain Boyd officiating, The family will receive friends for a half hour following the service in the Family Life Center of St. Paul's Episcopal Church. My mamy memories of Charlie are from four years at Clemson University. We were roommates for two of those and he was truly one of a kind. Other fond memories are of summertime visits at the Minshew home on John's Island.
