Charles Macaluso Obituary

Charles Samuel Macaluso DARIEN, CT - Charles Samuel Macaluso of Darien, Connecticut and Kiawah Island, South Carolina died on February 22, 2021 at the age of 77. Born in Elizabeth, NJ, he was the son of the late Samuel and Josephine Macaluso. Charles, affectionately known to friends and family as Mac, was a selfless man of generous spirit, intellectual curiosity and often, irreverent humor. He is deeply mourned by his wife and partner in life, Lynn Jaynes, their children Kelly Coles (Richard) of Harrison, NY, Jeff Macaluso (Andrea) of Ridgefield, CT and Chris Macaluso (Irene) of Rye, NY; his six grandchildren, Isobel, Corbin and Theodore Coles, Charles "Chase" and Olivia Macaluso and Kiki Macaluso. He is also survived by his sisters Sandra Mueller, Geraldine Blyskal and Jacqueline Canavan of Westfield, NJ, sister and brother-in-law, Heather and Robert Chipley of Charleston, SC and three nephews, Evan, Hunter and Chris Chipley, of Charleston who considered him their "other Dad". A graduate of Siena College and Rutgers University, he held Masters degrees in English and Public Administration. His doctoral studies were at SUNY Albany. He began his career in public health in New York and New Jersey before moving into the field of mental health, serving as Executive Director of residential facilities in Westchester and Dutchess Counties in New York. He served on numerous state and federal mental health boards and was a former board member of The Silver Hill Hospital in New Canaan, CT. In 1988, Mac joined his longtime friend, Dort Cameron, as a partner in The Airlie Group, an Investment Banking firm headquartered in Greenwich, CT; thus began his long and distinguished career in corporate finance. Renowned for his innovative leadership style, he served on numerous corporate boards and played a pivotal role in several corporations, including Global Crossing, Flag Telecom, Woodbine Acquisitions Corp. and Geo Speciality Chemicals. At the time of his death, Charles was CEO and Founding Principal of Dorchester Capital Advisors, Chairman of the Board of Williams Industrial Services Group, a Director of Landec Corporation, Pilgrims Pride Corporation and Lead Director of Darling Ingredients, a position he held for the past fourteen of his nineteen years of service to the company. Mac was a trusted friend and advisor in both his personal and business life. He enhanced lives and careers by astutely identifying an individual's strengths. He spread confidence and self-worth but never falsely. He was quick to point out flawed thinking, to advise against an idea or action if he believed it would create disappointment in the long run. "Never set a person up for failure" was one of his self mandates. He was kind and considerate but he was always truthful. One of his greatest leadership strengths was his ability to recognize his own weaknesses and surrounded himself with others from whom he could learn. Fifty plus years of brilliant and ethical leadership is his business legacy. His oft' heard motto "Every day's a holiday, every meal, a banquet" is how he lived his life. He was an inspiration. A private, family service was held on Saturday February 27, 2021 at The Talmadge Hill Community Church in Darien, CT. Plans are underway for a celebration of Charles's life when Covid restrictions have been lifted. His family requests that those wishing to honor Charles consider a gift to either The Trevor Zoo, Millbrook School, Millbrook, NY (www.millbrook.org/trevor-zoo-home) or Kiawah Conservancy, Kiawah Island, SC (www.kiawahconservancy.org) in his memory. I am so sad to learn of Mac's death. We worked together on various projects starting with Cherrydale in 1995. Mac was always calm and insightful no matter what. Always a smile, always a good thought. He was always very generous with his time and insights. When he talked you listened to your benefit. It was an honor and a pleasure to have known him. Fair winds and a following sea my old friend...

There are no words to espress how saddened I am am about this news.
I met Chuck back In 1982 at RCS.
He was a mentor, teacher, Dad, friends and the list goes on.
This man is a big reason that I am who I am today. I’ve been emailing him with no reply. I was hoping he was away, busy with family stuff..
but now we know he’s crossed over to be with the Angels that he rightfully deserves to be surrounded by.

I will miss our talks, our next lunch, hearing how proud you were of whom I’ve become, despite the statistics set upon some of us.
You will always and always hold a dear place in my heart.
Thank you for being the Dad I was not brought into this world with, the person that believed in me, never judged me.
I love you so deeply, and will miss you terribly.
Love you Chuck,
Maggie Messina

Macaluso family, I am so sorry for your loss. I am an old friend of Mac’s who spent many hours working through corporate restructuring with him. He was always a wise and gentle voice in tough times. I last saw him walking up and down Brookside Road a month or two before the pandemic hit and we promised each other we’d meet for lunch soon but sadly, that opportunity never came. I will miss him greatly, he was a fantastic guy. Please accept my condolences.

Mr. Macaluso was a wonderful man and fun to talk with about his life, his home and his family. I often saw him taking a morning walk in Darien while on my way to work. I hope and pray for his family to find happiness in their many memories of him. Fondly, Laurie Griffith

I just wanted to share with Lynn and their children that I was quite astonished when I read the obit to find out that Chuck and I were the same age. I always thought he was older than I because he was so wise, certainly wiser than me, and when faced with a challenging problem, I always sought his counsel. My first venture in overseeing a residential program was immeasurably eased by having the comfort of Chuck in the organization with whom I could confer. I am so grateful and my heart goes out to all of you in this time of heartbreak and sorrow. With kindness, David A. Crenshaw

Chuck was an inspiration and mentor to me during the days we worked closely together in Residential Care in Dutchess County. I learned so much from him and he was always kind, and caring. His wife Lynn was also a wonderful and caring partner who contributed enormously to the success of our work together in the 1970's. My prayers and love go out to his family. He was a giant of a man with an even bigger heart.
