Charles Long Obituary

LONG, JR., Charles WALTERBORO - Mr. Charles Oden Long, Jr., 84, of 213 Dorsey Street, Walterboro, died Sunday morning, January 18, 2009, at the Colleton Medical Center in Walterboro. Funeral services, with Military Honors provided by the United States Marine Corps and Masonic Rites, will be conducted 6 o'clock Tuesday evening, January 20, 2009, from Black Creek Baptist Church, 4931 Black Creek Road, Walterboro with The Reverend Dr. Walter T. Doyle officiating. The family will receive friends at the church following the services. Mr. Long was born September 12, 1924, in Parris Island, and was a son of the late Charles Oden Long, Sr. and the late Bessie Irene Benton Long. He served his country faithfully in the United States Marine Corps during World War II and was a retired route salesman from the Walterboro Branch of Coburg Dairy. He was formerly employed by J. I. Thomas and NAPA Auto Parts Store. He was a member of Edgewood Baptist Church and attended Black Creek Baptist Church. He was a Master Mason holding his fifty year membership at Unity Masonic Lodge No. 55, Ancient Free Masons, and was a former carrier for The Post and Courier in Charleston. He will be remembered for the love and devotion he had for his wife and for his love of camping. Surviving are: his wife: Mrs. Margaret Crosby Long; two sons, Charles Oden Long, III of Lake Wales, Florida and Scott Long of Adele, Georgia; two daughters, Brenda G. Heffner of Hendersonville and Paula C. Rutland of Walterboro; a brother, Allan Long of Hendersonville; and a sister, Bessie Ann Crews of Hendersonville. There are nine grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; and two great great grandchildren that also survive. In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested that memorials be directed in his memory to the following, Black Creek Baptist Church, 4931 Black Creek Road, Walterboro, SC 29488; or to, Colleton County Relay for Life, 5900 Core Road, Suite 504, North Charleston, SC 29406.
