Charles Crosby Obituary

Charles Richard "Dick" Crosby Charleston - Charles Richard "Dick" Crosby, 85, of Charleston, South Carolina, husband of Wynona "Nonie" Gillmore Crosby, entered into eternal rest Tuesday, April 28, 2020. Dick was born July 15, 1934 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, son of the late Charles Leonard Crosby and Frances Fisher Crosby. He was the oldest of three children and grew up in Vicksburg, Mississippi. Dick was a graduate of Louisiana State University, receiving a BS, MS, and Ph.D. in Physics. Dick worked for Texas Instruments in Dallas for several years before coming to the College of Charleston in 1972. He helped to bring the College into the computer age by establishing the Computer Science Department. In addition to teaching courses, he was the Department Chair for many years. In the year of his retirement in 2000, he endowed and established the C. Richard Crosby Distinguished Teaching Chair of Computer Science. In 1971, Dick and his bridge partner won first place in the Charles Goren Intercollegiate Bridge Final. He continued to coordinate and play bridge weekly at First (Scots) Presbyterian Church where he was an active member. He enjoyed going to Scotland and Ireland to play golf with his friends. Dick and Nonie enjoyed domestic and international travel and went on many trips with friends Carla and Gary. One of the most memorable trips was to the Galapagos Islands. He also enjoyed attending the Charleston Symphony Orchestra concerts for over 30 years. Dick was a loving husband of Nonie Crosby for 26 years and close friend for many more. A special thanks to his caregivers who provided care, support, and friendship to Dick and his family throughout his life. He is survived by his wife, Wynona Crosby; sister, Carolyn Crosby Buchannan (John) of Delta, AL; brother James Ronald Crosby of Lineville, AL; step-son Joe Mills (Jennifer) of Charleston, SC; sister-in-law Betty Jo Haynie of Montrose, AL; nieces Connie Cloyd (Barry) of Mt. Juliet, TN and Maya Lee of Lineville, AL, and a nephew, Christopher Whitehead (Chrystal) of Fayetteville, AL. Nonie: i was made aware of Dick's passing this week and wanted to offer my condolences to you. While we didn't have the opportunity to know one another well during my years as your neighbor, your dedication to him was unmistakable! I have no doubt you were central to his life well lived and send love to you during this sad time. Deb

Nonie,

I am so very, very sorry for your loss. My memories of Dr. Crosby come from growing up in First (Scots). In addition to Sunday mornings, I remember seeing him at Bridge whenever I happened to be around on a Tuesday. One summer, when I was home from Spring Break, I was walking into the church as you were arriving for Bridge. Dr. Crosby was in a wheelchair at the time, and I wheeled him in while you parked the car. I remember his foot slipped and when I realized it, I felt terrible! My other memory doesn't exactly involve him; rather, I remember my dad talking about how intelligent he was. "Genius" is the one word I will always associate with Dr. Crosby. Although I've since moved away, it's heartbreaking to lose one of the pillars of the community I grew up in. I and the congregation of Sea Island Presbyterian Church will be keeping you in our prayers.

Condolences and prayers to the family and friends. Dr Crosby taught me in Computer Science at the College of Charleston and I ended up graduating with a major in CS. Thank you for your knowledge, Dr Crosby. I always thought you were brilliant and you were an excellent teacher. Rest in peace.

When I came to the College of Charleston as Dean of Sciences and Mathematics in the summer of 1991, Dick was one of the first people with whom I worked closely. I learned right away that Dick had very strong opinions and that he argued for them strongly and effectively. What was most impressive was that in the few times that he proved to be wrong, he admitted it as quickly and openly as he had first proposed his opinion. Dick gave the opinions of others fair hearing, and he presented his own without equivocation. He was a man of integrity. I am sad that he is gone, and I am sad that I did not spend more time with him when he was here.

Dear Nonie,

I am saddened by your loss of Dick but bolstered by the many happy years you had together. Dick arrived at The College when we did so we all shared the fun of those early years, including the bridge games! I enjoyed being able to see you at Wando and hope that you still have many happy days ahead with your son and many friends. I am certain that Joe would join me in offering our condolences. Fondly, Roban Benich

Dick was my advisor in computer science at the College of Charleston (CofC) and my friend as well since I am only 15 years his junior. His advice was instrumental in guiding my career path through Ph.D. to teaching in the computer science department at CofC. I was honored to hold for a few years the teaching chair he endowed. Bon voyage my friend - I will miss you!
