Charles Christen Obituary

CHRISTEN, SR., Charles Chief Petty Officer Charles Patrick Christen, Sr., USN (Ret.), known by the names of Pat & Limey died August 21 of Prostate Cancer; having volunteered for experiential treatments and fought a courageous and determined battle to the end. Funeral Services are scheduled for Wednesday, August 24, 2005 in Holy Trinity Episcopal Church at Ten-Thirty O'Clock. Interment, Live Oak Memorial Gardens. Friends may call at J. HENRY STUHR, INC.,WEST ASHLEY CHAPEL Tuesday from five until seven O'clock. Mr. Christen was born in Alberta, Canada, October 6, 1918, a son of Charles W. and Hazel Bellingham Christen. Pat was a retired U. S. Naval Chief Petty Officer after 37 years of service and was a Pearl Harbor Survivor. He was a World War II Veteran having completed 12 missions in the Pacific and one in the Atlantic on the USS Phelps. Following retirement from the Navy, Pat served as a supervisor of Nuclear Support at the Charleston Navl Shipyard. A member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church and a former member and past President of the Breakfast Club, Charles was raised in Deluth, MN and graduated from Deluth High School. He was a graduate of the University of Illinois and a member of the Alumni Association. Chief Charles P. Christen, Sr. was a member of The Pearl Harbor Survivors Association, The Civil Conservation Corps, the Federal Retirees Association, a volunteer for Soup Kitchen , and an avid gardener. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Virginia Beane Christen; a son, Charles Patrick (Chuck) Christen, Jr. of Charleston, SC; two daughters, Julie H. Bone of Atlanta, GA and Christina C. Nicholson of Oak Ridge, TN; 10 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren; 1 brother, Jack Christen of Deluth, MN; 1 sister, Mary Christen of Washington. Pat was loved and beloved by all his family, friends and shipmates. Memorials may be made to Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 95 Folly Road, Charleston, SC. 29407. Dear Mrs. Christen,

I will miss Mr. Christen and his soft gentle smile.. He was truly a wonderful man..Just remember, You WILL be together again one day.. That is the most comforting promise. At least there is no more suffering and pain for him. I know you can't see him, but whisper his name in your heart, and he will be there...

The remaining crew members of the USS Phelps wish to express their deepest sympathy on the lost of Pat "Limey" Christen. He will certainly be missed at the ship's reunion this October. Personally, he was a dear true friend of mine and I will miss those phone calls with him very much. I loved him like a brother
