Charles Barker Obituary

BARKER, SR., Charles Charles William "Bill" Barker Sr., 87, died Friday, March 6, 2009 at Sandpiper Nursing & Rehab in Mt. Pleasant, SC. Mr. Barker was born December 16, 1921 in Salisbury, NC, to Edgar Caleb Barker and Irene Cornelison Barker. He spent his childhood in Columbia, SC where his parents ran the cafeteria at the Jefferson Hotel. At the age of 16 he entered Georgia Tech where he played trumpet in the school's marching band and majored in engineering. Mr. Barker retired from management after more than 35 years with Roberts Supply Company in Charleston. During his nearly 50 years in Charleston he was active with several amateur theater groups and productions including annual benefit shows for the local chapter of the American Cancer Society. He also served as technical director with the Charleston Opera Company. Mr. Barker is survived by his daughter Michele deCalverhall Barker of Beaufort, sons Lyons Fitzgibbons Barker and wife Marya of Columbia, SC and Charles William Barker Jr. and wife Marcia of Greenville, SC; three grandchildren and one great grandchild. In lieu of a memorial service the family will hold a private gathering at a later date. Memorials may be made to the Charleston chapter of the American Cancer Society or the Charleston Animal Society. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR, INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL.
