Charles Bailey Obituary

BAILEY, JR., Charles Mt. Pleasant, SC Charles Edmond Chip Bailey, Jr., 48, passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 23, at the University of Washington Hospital, Seattle, WA, after a brave 5-1/2 year battle with cancer. His courage and perseverance were an infinite source of hope and inspiration to many people. Chip is survived by his wife, Kerri Wilson Bailey, son, Jared, and daughter, Rebecca. Also surviving are his mother, Sue Bailey, of Raleigh; his brother, David Bailey and wife, Susan and their children, Megan and Jennifer, of Alpharetta, GA; sisters, Nancy Trevillian and husband, John and their children, A.J., Adam and Nathan, of Raleigh; and Barbara Healy and husband, Mike and their children, David, Charlie and Daniel, of Raleigh. He is survived also by his mother-in-law, Diane Wilson, brother-in-law, Reed Wilson, and father-in-law, Michael Wilson, all of Charleston, SC. Chip was born in Greenville, NC, on July 12, 1957, to Nettie Sue Phillips Bailey and the late Charles Edmond ( Ed ) Bailey. Growing up in Raleigh, he graduated from Sanderson High School in 1975, was an Eagle Scout with Troop 376, and was an active member in the youth programs at Hillyer Memorial Christian Church. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from North Carolina State University in 1980, where he received membership in both Tau Beta Pi and Chi Epsilon. Upon graduation from NCSU, Chip moved to Charleston, SC, where he enjoyed a career of 25 years as a civil engineer for the Department of Defense, Construction Division of the Naval Facilities Engineering Command. Chip was an elder at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Charleston, and he served as a faithful leader in many areas of the church's life. He was also an active volunteer for the Boy Scouts of America. His many spare-time personal accomplishments included being a leading member of several popular classic rock bands in the Charleston area. Chip's personal ethics and pride, his energy for life and sense of humor, his devotion to his family and friendliness to everyone, and his musical talent and sense of adventure made the man who was loved by so many. The family wishes to take this opportunity to express our deepest gratitude to the transplant team and entire staff of 8NE, University of Washington Hospital, and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center, Seattle, WA. A memorial service to celebrate Chip's life will be conducted at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, December 10, at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Charleston, SC, by Dr. Robert Knight. The family will receive friends following the service in the fellowship hall of the church. I had the pleasure of meeting Chip when I came to work for SODIV in 1987. I worked in the area adjacent to him until I moved to Colorado in 1999. Please know that I am so sorry for your loss. Chip was a wonderful person and will never be forgotten!

Having the great privilege of having known Chip truly makes us a blessed family. Rarely do people have the honor of knowing the kindness, talents, sense of humors, bravery, and courage that Chip possessed. Thank you, Kerri, Jared, and Rebecca for sharing such a wonderful person with us. If prayers were enough, he would still be with us. May God comfort you all. With deep sadness and alot of love, Bobbi, Mark, Eva, and Wes.

Words can not explain how Chip has blessed our lives. I too was a member of Fowl Play and had the opportunity to play next to this man for several years. Those years, hear him singing "Brown Sugar", have been the best years of my life. I will always have fond memories of Chip as a wonderful keyboardist, singer, band member, friend, father, and husband. My family sends our dearest sympathy to the Bailey family on the loss of a great man.

Chip was a great guy: brilliant, loyal, hardworking, talented, and funloving. I will never forget the great times playing music with him in Fowl Play band and working with him at SouthDiv. Most of my experiences with Chip are with the band. His enthusiasm mixed with his keyboarding skills really energized the band and made it a lot of fun. I remember how hard he worked on that Robert Palmer song "Bang a Gong". Man, he had all those parts down and made sure we didn't miss a lick till we got it right. It was great. He did a pretty good Mick Jagger impression on Brown Sugar, too. We all surely do miss him.

I offer my sympathy to Kerri, Jared, Rebecca and the rest of Chips family.

My prayers are with Chip's family during this sad time. For many years, my good friend Barney Derrick and I would follow Straight Lace around to where ever they were playing in the Charleston area. Chip was a very nice guy who will be greatly missed.

I went many years (at the Shipyard) hearing about the legend, "Chip Bailey". Well it wasn't until I transferred jobs to SouthDiv that I actually got to meet this legend. I knew at this time that this was a wonderful person... Years later Chip and I established a lasting friendship not just at SouthDiv, but outside work. It was there that I really gained a true appreciation for who Chip Bailey was and what he stood for. And wow! That guy could play the keyboard. I idolized him for many years while he played with the band Straight Lace and later had the privilege of playing along side of him in the band Fowl Play. I will never forget Chip. As the lyrics go....."If there's a rock & roll heaven" I'm sure they got one hell of a keyboard player. Love you Chip. matt

I had the pleasure of working with Chip for about 15 years. He not only was a co-worker but a great friend. He had strength and courage that I have never seen in anyone else before. He will be truly missed by many people.

Please accept my most sincere sympathy in your loss. I worked with Chip off and on at Navfac from 1987 until my retirement in 2004. He was always soft spoken, very nice, very knowledgable and always had a kind twinkle in his eye. Each and every time I did business with Chip I enjoyed the encounter. And because of those encounters, I have very fond memories of him, and will never forget him.

I was greatly saddened when I read about Chip's passing in the Raleigh News and Observer newspaper. I remember Chip as an old friend from Sanderson High School in Raleigh, North Carolina (where I still live). We had a lot of good times together. A couple of funny experiences we had that I remember were when he drove his volkswagon down Six Forks Road driving from the passenger side (I was in the back seat). We got a lot of looks from people on that one. I also remember once at the Pier Nightclub when I talked him into getting on stage during a break and playing an impromptu solo piano concerto. I lost touch with Chip over the years but I will always remember him and his friendliness. I would like to offer my deepest condolence to the family.

Sincerely,

Kurt Trumbower

My deepest sympathy is sent to the entire family and friends. I knew Chip as a little tot and I always looked forward to seeing him, because you never knew what to expect when he was around. There is one thing that always stays with me when I see a fly - I think back to when Chip said watch me Karate Chop this fly - and we know that it's not easy even trying to catch them - but leave it to Chip - he did exactly what he said he was going to do. He was always full of life and he was a Wonderful Man. I'm glad he has a wonderful family and children to keep his memory fresh with us all. My prayers are with you all and I will miss him too. God is with you through it all.
