MOISE, Cecile SUMTER, SC - Cecile Rosenberg Moïse, age 87, wife of the late Francis Marion Moïse, Jr. died July 9, 2006 in Atlanta, Georgia. Cile Moïse was born January 24, 1919 in Abbeville, SC, the daughter of the late Solomon Herbert Rosenberg and the late Octavia Schwerin Rosenberg, the third of five children. She graduated from Abbeville High School in 1936, then attended Hollins College in Roanoke, Virginia before graduating from Converse College in Spartanburg, SC in 1940. She moved to Sumter, SC in 1941, where she met her future husband Nick Moïse in 1942. They married on January 1, 1943 in Phenix City, Alabama, while he was stationed at Ft. Benning, GA, and they enjoyed over 58 years of marriage. Her post-war years were devoted to building a home for her husband and their four children born between 1947 and 1949, which involved years of Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts, Brownie Scouts and Girl Scouts, PTA, swim team and school sports. She also worked a number of years as the librarian at Crosswell Drive Elementary School to help put four children through college. Her broader, 60-year commitment to the community included: First Presbyterian Church, where she was a life member and committee chair of the Women of the Church; Friends of the Library; Sumter-Shaw Community Concert Association; Sumter Gallery of Art; Tuomey Hospital, where she volunteered over 3000 hours; Sumter County Historical Society, which is housed in her great-grandmother's house; Converse College, where she was selected as one of the Converse 100 as a representative of the true spirit of Converse College; American Red Cross, where she volunteered for over 51 years; United Ministries; Sumter Garden Club; Junior Welfare League; and Temple Sinai Sisterhood. For these and other commitments, she was chosen Sumter Volunteer of the Year in 1989. Her final years in Sumter were spent as an active resident of Covenant Place, where at various times she wrote articles for the newsletter, volunteered in the library, served on the Activities Committee, and chaired the Hospitality Committee. Her other loves were the Sumter YMCA, where she exercised until she was 87 years old; traveling inside and outside the US with her husband, friends and family; and painting, mostly portraits and landscapes. She is survived by her three sons, Marion Moïse of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Robert Moïse of Charleston, SC, and Phil Moïse of Atlanta, GA; nine grandchildren, Elizabeth Moïse of Jacksonville, FL, Deaver Traywick of Spearfish, SD, Meta Moïse of Atlanta, GA, Nina Traywick of Bogotá, Colombia, Kathryn Moïse of New York, NY and Los Angeles, CA, George Moïse of Los Angeles, CA, Walter Moïse of Los Angeles, CA, Josh Moïse of New York, NY, and Harby Moïse Hodges of Houston, TX, and a step-granddaughter, Sarah Mitchell Bradham of Charleston, SC; two daughters-in-law, Caroline Moïse of Atlanta, Georgia, and Pamela Bradham Moïse of Charleston, SC; a brother and sister-in-law, Dr. and Mrs. George V. Rosenberg, of Abbeville, SC; a sister-in-law, Pauline Moïse Harritt of Sumter, SC; three brothers-in-law, Robert B. Moïse of Charleston, SC, James Moïse of Sumter, SC and Francis Moïse of Dallas, TX; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, in-laws, their children and grandchildren, and many friends. She was preceded in death by her daughter Cecile Virginia Moïse in 1998, and her husband Francis Marion Moïse, Jr. in 2001. Funeral Services will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, Thursday, July 13, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. with Dr. Mark Durrett officiating. Interment will follow at Sumter Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday, July 12, 2006 from 5-7 p.m., at Bullock Funeral Home. The family has asked that, in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to First Presbyterian Church, 9 W.
