Catherine Ellis Obituary

Catherine Sloane Cooper Ellis MT. PLEASANT - A graveside memorial service to celebrate the life of, Catherine Sloane Cooper Ellis will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, September 24, 2022 at Quaker Cemetery in Camden, SC. Rev. Pickett Wall will officiate. Memorials may be made to Thiel Meyer Pet Adoption Center, 128 Black River Road, Camden, SC 29020 or the Free Medical Clinic or charity of your choice. Sloane died Saturday, September 17, 2022. She was born in Washington, DC. Following graduation from the College of Charleston, Sloane moved to Washington, DC, to work for United States senator Strom Thurmond. Over her five-year tenure, she held several positions including Staff Assistant for the Senator's Personal Office and the Office of the President Pro Tempore, Legislative Correspondent for the US Senate Committee on Labor and Human Resources, and Assistant to the Chief Investigator for the Nominations and Investigations Judiciary Committee to confirm Supreme Court, Attorney General, and District Court nominees. She then held positions as Administrative Assistant for the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children in Arlington, Virginia, and National Conference Coordinator for Communities in Schools in Alexandria, Virginia. She was a passionate person who lived by her own rules. She loved her two children, her rescue dog, Gizmo, dancing, singing, and listening to music. Sloane is survived by her mother, Patricia C. Russell, of Daniel Island, SC (who was predeceased by her husband, Robert "Bob" Russell); her father, the Hon. Gafford Thomas Cooper, Jr. and his wife, Hope Howell Cooper of Camden, SC; children, Cooper Jeremiah Ellis of Brevard, NC, Riley Marie Ellis of Hendersonville, NC; siblings, Sarah Riley Cooper of Charleston, SC, Patricia Cooper Harris of Summerville, SC, Hope Boykin Langley of Simpsonville, SC, Martha Boykin Wallace of Camden, SC, Elizabeth Boykin Adams of Camden, SC and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. She was formerly married to Steven Ellis of Waxhaw, NC. Kornegay Funeral Home, Camden Chapel, is in charge of arrangements. Condolences may be left online for the family at www.kornegayfuneral.com.
