Cary James Thornal MT. PLEASANT - Cary James Thornal, 98, of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, entered into eternal rest Monday, January 23, 2023. His graveside service will be held Friday, January 27, 2023, in the Mt. Pleasant Memorial Gardens, 1308 Mathis Ferry Rd., at 2:00 pm. The family will receive friends Friday from 1:00 pm to 1:45 pm in J. Henry Stuhr Inc., Mount Pleasant Chapel, 1494 Mathis Ferry Rd. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Mount Pleasant Chapel. Cary was born October 12, 1924, in Otranto, South Carolina, son of the late John Cary Thornal and the late Annie Lou Parker Thornal. He proudly served in the US Navy as a fire controlman on the heavy cruiser, USS Quincy during WWII. When he and his wife moved to Mt. Pleasant, SC, he became a member of First Baptist Church, and then a founding member of East Cooper Baptist Church. After their son, Dennis, was born with cerebral palsy, they worked with other parents to get classes started for special needs individuals. Cary also enjoyed working with all kinds of crafts and belonged to the East Cooper Crafters Guild. He is survived by his niece, Shelia Bealer (Kevin) of Harleyville, SC; and two nephews, Craig Bishop (MJ) of Harleyville, SC, and Don Maloy (Patricia) of Clemmons, NC. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary Eileen Thornal and their son, Dennis Thornal. Memorials may be made to East Cooper Baptist Church, 361 Egypt Rd., Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464.
