Caroline Hills Obituary

Caroline Chapman Hills N. CHARLESTON - Caroline Chapman Hills, 93, of North Charleston, South Carolina, wife of the late Lansing Carpenter Hills, entered into eternal rest on Thursday, November 2, 2023. Her funeral service will be held Thursday, November 9, 2023 in the J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Northwoods Chapel at 2:00 pm, and the family will receive friends beginning one hour prior. Interment will be November 15, 2023 at Oak Grove Cemetery, Springfield, MA. Caroline, the daughter of the late Ernest Harvey Chapman and Grace Lucille Chapman, was born in Springfield, Massachusetts, where she spent her childhood. She attended college at Westbrook Junior College in Portland, Maine. She returned to Springfield, where she fell in love with Lansing who was attending Springfield College. They married in 1951, had their 3 children, and began their journey together following Lansing's career advancements in the Veterans Administrations. This took them through 7 different states with Caroline establishing lovely homes every stop on her journey. The 8th move brought Caroline and a "retired" Lansing to Charleston, SC in 1987, where they remained until their passing. Caroline and Lance volunteered at Trident Hospital many years together until he passed in 2009. Caroline remained many more years as a volunteer until her health no longer permitted. Caroline and Lance enjoyed traveling to many countries, ballroom and square dancing and camping along the east coast. Caroline also enjoyed bird-watching, working crossword puzzles and word jumbles. She is survived by three children: Peter Chapman Hills (Cynthia) of Butler, PA, Deborah Jean Carlson (Paul) of Ladson, SC, and Barbara Lynn Kochman (Kenneth) of Canonsburg, PA; five grandchildren: Joel Lansing Hills (Desiree), Rebecca Lynn Boie (Alvin), Kenneth Michael Kochman II (Betsy), Andrea Grace Whitesides (Justin), Jonathan Peter Kochman; six great-grandchildren: Reilly, Adeline, Eleanor, Ezekiel, Rory, and Bryn.; cousin, Harvey Worthington of MI. In addition to her late husband and parents she was preceded in death by her sister, Jean Voegeli; granddaughter, Christian McKenzie Hills; and nephew, Mark F. Voegeli. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Agape Care Group Hospice and Trident Area Agency on Aging. A memorial message may be sent to the family by visiting our website at www.jhenrystuhr.com.
