How fortunate I was that Converse College chose Carol and me to room together our freshman year! Our friendship had such a positive impact on my entire life, even after I transferred to Indiana University to pursue my degree in piano. Carol was always in my thoughts and heart. She loved to sing and we enjoyed performing together. She loved books and often stayed up very late at night reading fine literature. For years afterwards, I regretted not having had serious discussions about what she had read. She was a scholar and a writer. She had an adventurous spirit and one weekend flew in a small plane to Indiana University to attend a rehearsal of the opera Turandot before it was performed in the World's Fair in New York. She was always a welcome guest in my family's home in Waynesboro, Georgia. My parents immediately recognized her outstanding character. Carol is already greatly missed!

I met Carol back in the early in the 1980's. Her last name made me stop in my tracks. I asked her if she were related to the great twentieth century, Wilhelm Furtwaengler. When she said "yes" she and her husband began to tell me many fascinating about their famous relative. I'm not sure that Carol had realized just how important and famous he was.

Unfortunately it´s been too many years since being with this fascinating, larger than life character. She and Zan were full of "the arts" way before most of us were ready , but admire them both. My Mom was their family´s biggest fan. My prayers go out to all of them.

I met Carol many years ago through my brother Steve. He was a teacher at the "original" James Island High School on Camp Rd. Went on a field trip to Carowind´s with Steve, others, Carol and I believe one of her daughter´s went too. She was very social, friendly, kind, and I could go on forever. We had similar issues food and substance. She never made you feel like a stranger. Sending my deepest sympathy, prayers, and love at your loss. May your faith ease your heartache. God Bless.
