Carol Beyer Obituary

Carol Beth Beyer CHARLESTON - Carol Beth Beyer, 64, of Charleston, SC, passed away on Friday, April 17, 2015. Carol was born in Cleveland, OH on November 6, 1950, to Alice C. and the late Herbert A. Beyer. She is survived by her mother (Gladstone, MO) and brother William E. (Nanette), nieces Tara L. and Shanna M. and nephew Landon D. all of Parkville, MO. Carol was a music teacher and professional musician, an accomplished performer on cello, oboe and piano. She earned a bachelor's degree from Baldwin Wallace College in Berea, OH and a Master's Degree in Music Theory from the University of South Carolina in Columbia, SC. An active performer in the Charleston community and throughout South Carolina, she was principal cellist in the Charleston Symphony in the late 1970's and early 1980's; she performed regularly in the Beaufort and Long Bay(Myrtle Beach) and Hilton Head Symphony Orchestras. Throughout her career, Carol performed in many operas, musical theatre productions, weddings, church services and other public events. She performed in many concerts and recitals in the Piccolo Spoleto Festival since its founding in 1979; behind the scenes, she also provided valuable input to the committee of local arts professionals who designed and launched that popular companion festival to Spoleto Festival USA. Carol also performed on numerous occasions in her own chamber music ensemble, The Heathcliff Consort, (named for her oboe, Heathcliff). For 30 years, Carol was a beloved member of the College of Charleston Music Department. Her versatility and skill kept her in constant demand; she accompanied hundreds of student musicians during her time at the College as well as rehearsing countless musical productions and other events presented by the Department. Because of Carol's experience and expertise as accompanist and coach of these serious young musicians, she was often invited to serve as adjudicator of solo and ensemble competitions for a wide variety of music organizations and schools. A dedicated nature and animal lover, Carol was an enthusiastic member of the Koi Society of Charleston; she was keenly interested in plants and horticulture and was also a devoted caretaker of squirrels which she often relocated to nearby forests around the Lowcountry where they would be safer than in the streets of Charleston neighborhoods. A Celebration of Life ceremony will be held at 11:00am Saturday, May 9, 2015 at the Simons Center Recital Hall on the College of Charleston campus. Carol was a very spiritual person whose quiet manner cloaked one of the finest human beings I've ever known. We were close during some difficult times of mine personally and she was always there. She was a sweet soul and I miss her very much.
Words fall far short of my poor ability to express my love.and admiration of this beautiful person.I miss her so much. John A.Morrow

Dearest Carol--I think of you so often and miss you....I know I always will. Sophia, who is 16 now, has filled our house with music for so many years now. I wish you could meet each other. I've told her (and my other 2 children) about you. I remember you holding her as a baby at her christening...and then you met all 3 of them at Folly Beach when we visited...so long ago. I hope that we will meet again, Carol....Love to you always...

Thinking of you, Carol. "It's never dull!" we used to joke when things got chaotic....I wonder where you are now....surely in my heart and mind.

Carol, I just found out that you have moved on to another incarnation. Oh, how sad I am. I will miss you so much...You taught me how to play the cello with such patience and good humor (long live the diablo Dotzauer!) and I have valued your friendship so much. I loved the tours of your mysterious yard and the updates on all of your fish and your beautiful sensitivity. I love you, Carol.

Carol was my stand partner in the Beaufort Symphony for more than ten years. We were always dismayed when we found that the Nutcracker Pas de Deux was again on the December concert. -yet she played the solo so beautifully. a dear buddy whom I will miss!

Ms. Beyer was the most wonderful accompanist for me as a violinist for the past 7 years. Her dedication and compassion was so uplifting to the students she accompanied. May her soul rest in the hands of Christ and may her name be remembered in our hearts.

My sincerest condolences to Carol's family, friends and mutual colleagues. In addition to being one of the sweetest and most gentle souls that God ever put on this earth, Carol was the consummate professional musician. Her immense talent, skill and dedication was apparent day in and day out, year after year. I'm blessed to have been her friend and colleague. May her memory be eternal.
