Carlysle Barfield Obituary

Carlysle Barfield CHARLESTON - Dr. Carlysle Barfield, 77, of Charleston, South Carolina, died at Roper Hospital on November 8, 2024 after a very brief illness. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Downtown Chapel. Dr. Barfield was the only son of the late Carlysle Barfield and the late Sarah Leona Maye. He was a rheumatologist affiliated with Roper St. Francis and maintained a private practice here in Charleston for 44 years. He was well loved by his patients and was always extremely devoted to offering the best medical care he could provide. In his personal life, Carlysle was known for his dry wit, his love of travel and the opera, and his passionate commitment to the arts and his devotion to Charleston Symphony Orchestra. At his request, there will be a private gathering. He is survived by his only sibling and sister, Ciri Colee, LPC, and a host of cousins and close friends who loved him dearly. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Charleston Symphony Orchestra, 480 East Bay St., Charleston SC 29403.. Dr. Barfield was one of the most important people for me for 13+ years. Today in my appt with Dr. Charles Smith, he mentioned that Dr. Barfield had died. I almost fell over. He was so knowledgeable on fibromyalgia unlike any other. Always had a sympathetic ear and manner. To his staff friends, my sympathies. It will be tough not having him to call on in the future. But he has left me with great memories.

Dr Barfield became my Rheumatologist 36 years ago. He was awesome. I saw him the month before his recent retirement and we had jokes like always. We always joked about me knowing him almost as long as I´ve known my husband. He was a great Doctor.

Carlysle became my doctor over 25 years ago and literally saved my life. I am shocked and saddened to hear of his death. He was very dedicated and caring.

In 1993 I first met Carlysle in Zurich (CH). It was friendship at first sight. Many meetings followed. In 1995 I did an internship at MUSC. Carlysle was at my wedding in the Netherlands in 1999. In 2006, when I lived with my family in Curaçao, Carlysle came to stay for a week. We have experienced so many wonderful moments together. Carlysle was a very educated, kind and caring man. A true gentleman. I'm going to miss him terribly. I wish all my American friends a lot of strength and wisdom for the coming period. Thinking of Carlysle, his family and you
