Carlton Poulnot Obituary

Carlton was a special person. Only knew him a short time. He was so upbeat for all he was going thru. I feel blessed that I got a chance to have met him.

So sorry to hear, I had been meaning to get in touch since my return to MtP. Carlton was a very nice man to work with. Mrs. Poulnot, Kirk and Carla my thoughts are with you.

Dotty and I enjoyed the time spent at the ChYC , eating, drinking & sailing, and recently sailing at the Pond in our Soiling RC boats. Carlton was a great person and we will miss him.

To the Poulnot family: Carlton was a friend and confidant when we both worked for the City of Charleston, City Hall. WE discussed many ideas together, and had a great relationship. At the time, City Hall was a great place to work with all the city hall employees; especially working for Mayor Palmer Gillard. He worked in the Engineers office, and I was the Purchasing Agent, right across the hall on the first floor. What a fine person to work with. The entire Poulnot family can be very proud of Carlton and the life he lead. With deepest respect, Bert Zidlick.

Ginny and my deepest sympathies go to Carlton's family members, especially to Donna, in the loss of this fine man. We got to know Carlton when he brokered our boat 10 years ago. We later had the pleasure of meeting others in his family during several camping outings. We've always enjoyed his many stories, most quite humorous, and he seemed to have one for every occasion. What an accomplished man he was! He showed me, in our numerous conversations during his illness and treatments that, while he fought hard, he showed exceptional strength and accepted his fate with grace and positiveness that we can only wish we can have when our times come. My God's grace comfort all of his family as they both grieve and celebrate his life.

Donna, I'm sorry that I didn't get to know Carlton longer than I did. He helped me on the purchase of my last boat which I truly appreciate. He struck me as the epitome of a true gentleman. Please accept deepest sympathies from Bridget and I for you and your whole family. He will be greatly missed.

Donna and Carla: I am so very sorry to learn about Carlton's death. I will never forget the fun afternoon my husband and I got to spend on his boat! He was so kind and generous! Please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers.

From the moment we met you, we were enamored with your beautiful, warm spirit. Thank you for letting us be a part of your family's life for nearly 40 years. We will miss you very much.

Donna, it has been a long time since we have seen each other. I am so sorry to hear about Carlton's death. My husband is in this age range too. Dear Carla, Kirk and family,
I was so sorry to hear of your dad's passing. I'm glad various circumstances, including sailing, resulted in a nice friendship between us. He always greeted me kindly, and was good for. a joke or two. The sailing community has lost another good one, but Heaven's sailing team just got a lot better.

As a somewhat new HYC member, I had the good fortune of getting to know Carlton while on the board. His love for the club and passion for sailing were such a beautiful thing. Thoughts and prayers to the family.

Carlton and I were in the USC NROTC class of 1959. We were commissioned on May 29. Carlton then had an outstanding naval career. He was a SEAL before they were officially called SEALS. He had the respect of everyone in the unit. A great student and member of the swim team. His family can take great pride that Carlton excelled in everything. Shipmate, fair winds and following seas.

Carlton and I were in the USC NROTC class of 1959. There were only 15 of us commissioned on May 29. Carlton was an excellent student and midshipman. He had the respect of everyone in the unit. Carlton had an outstanding Naval career. He was a SEAL before there were officially called SEALS. Carlton also had a great civilian career. His family can take pride in knowing he excelled at everything. Fair winds and following seas, shipmate!

I send my condolences to Kirk and the rest of his family. Carlton gave me my first job outside of the military back in the 1970's and I worked for him for many years. I will not be able to attend the service but I'll leave my number in case you would like to talk. (843)-754-8839

My dear friend Carlton Poulnot died Wednesday, January 23, 2019 after a long battle with cancer. He never gave up. I have many fond memories of Carlton from past years.

There was the time he owned an old wooden life boat, he had a well installed to accommodate an outboard motor. We would take it to the jetties to fish. One day we decided to take it offshore, we were caught in a rain storm. I remember him sitting in the stern, tiller in one hand, Boy Scout compass in the other, rain dripping off his chin. I was huddled in the bow, seeking protection.

Then in the Bahamas. He and his family were aboard RHUMB RUNNER, my family and I were aboard RAINBOW. We cruised the islands. On one occasion I towed the dinghy over the shallows, Carlton, his son Kirk, and my son George hung on to the dinghy with face masks and snorkels in place. When they saw conchs they would shout, let loose and dive. I would circle around and they would drop the conchs in the dinghy, hang on, and we would proceed until they dove again. After an afternoon of diving they climbed into the dinghy and rested as I headed back to the anchorage. Carlton was delivering a lecture to the boys. I could tell by his hand motions, but I can only guess what the subject was. A great, memorable day.

Then there was the time in Charleston Harbor when we took four Lutheran Pastors out for an afternoon sail. Another great time on a sailboat.

Rest in Peace, Carlton. You will be missed.

Prayers for the family and friends of Carlton. He was a true fighter but found ways to work with everybody. He is missed as a regular 8:30 Church member at St. Matthews where he served the Church and congregation. The community was made better by his efforts.
