Carl Whaley Obituary

Carl L. Whaley N. CHARLESTON - Carl L. Whaley, of North Charleston, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at his home on Saturday, July 1st, 2017. He was born on May 28th, 1941 in Centenary, SC, the son of the late Manley and Annie Whaley. Carl lived his life to the fullest. He was a successful businessman while always finding time to enjoy life's simplest pleasures. He learned about business early in his life before founding the Daley Corporation with his longtime partner, Dan Boling, in April 1968. He spent his career in Greenville, SC and was fortunate to retire in Charleston, where he met his wife. Throughout his retired years, he enjoyed time with family, played golf, attended Gamecock football games, toured the country in his RV, and built longtime friendships with his neighbors of Coosaw Creek Country Club. He was a kind, generous husband, father, and friend, and he was a true Southern gentleman, although most people did not always understand his thick Southern accent. He is survived by his loving wife, Judy; son, Van Whaley, of Louisville, KY; daughters, Kimberly Davis (Mike) of Chapin, SC; Dani Whaley, Greenville, SC; stepchildren, Frank Munaco (Lori, fiance;e) of Bluffton, SC, Sandra Munaco of Mt. Pleasant, SC, and Stefanie Renaud (Brandon) of Mt. Pleasant, SC; grandchildren, Hayden and Riley Davis, Annie Whaley, Jeanelle Smith, and Emily and Noelle Renaud; great-grandchild, Lizzie Smith; Pat Whaley, former wife, mother of his two daughters, and longtime friend; and sister, Anne Raymunt of Waterbury, CT. He was also preceded in death by three brothers. A Celebration of Carl Whaley's Life will be held on Monday, July 3rd from 2:00pm - 5:00pm at the Coosaw Creek Country Club in North Charleston, SC. For Family and Friends that are unable to join us on Monday, please celebrate Carl's spirit and have a "titch of wine", words he would have used when he wanted a "little bit of wine". In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Charleston, 676 Wando Park Blvd., Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464 or MUSC Foundation, 18 Bee Street, MSC 450, Charleston, SC 29425 (http://academic departments.musc.edu/giving/get-involved/ways-to-give). Simplicity Lowcountry Funeral, 7475 Peppermill Parkway, Suite E, North Charleston, SC is in charge of the arrangements. Visit our guestbook at www.legacy.com/obituaries/ charleston

Carl left this world 7 years ago today, July 1, 2024. Time has passed, but his influence is still profound in the lives of many who worked for him or with him. Speaking for myself, he taught me how to be a salesman. At first the definition of "salesman" may not be so glamorous. But Carl taught how to not only believe in a product but far more importantly, to believe in yourself. His style of selling empowered the customer, his showmanship, knowledge and confidence conveyed the message. Finally his positive attitude made the difference between success and failure. All of us are "salesman" in some way, no matter what walk of life. We seek and find our higher self, most often it is found by putting others first. "Service Excellence" was Carl's and Daley Corporation's motto. His principles live on all these years later, never to be forgotten. Thank you and RIP Carl Whaley! July 1, 2024.

It's been 5 years since Carl left his world for heaven above yet the impact of his life, his achievements and inspiration on all of our lives continues today. Is that not the defining mark of a man or woman even after they are gone? To inspire, motivate and build on a higher ideal with fresh ideas, yet at the same time enabling personal empowerment and it's leverage by company teamwork. His legacy carries on in the things we learned and what we have become all these years later. Carl was not only a pioneer in his field, but a strong advocate of focusing everyone who worked for him or knew him as friend or family to reach our potential. Some may say he was often a "showman" in sales. Yet what he (along with wife Pat and Dan Boling) really did was inspire us to perform always at our best, to love what we do and to be a team player. All of that and always in good humor and heartfelt benevolence toward any existing or potential customer. That is why Daley Corporation was successful far beyond any other company of its kind. He knew instinctively that the customer was the central focus of any sale, a lesson that many companies today still have not learned. He would say, "Make it easy for the customer to do business!" Carl was the epitome and embodiment of real "Service Excellence", just like the company he founded in 1968. Rest in peace Carl, we all learned so much from you and will never forget how you have changed our lives for the better. I worked for Carl from 1973 till 1997. I have now recently retired from the business. My career was forever influenced by him, and his stubborn drive to make me successful. I owe Carl a lot. He was a good, caring person. Not a day went by, that some situation didn't remind me of him. I am forever grateful to have worked for him, and known him. God bless.

May God's grace, strength and blessings console the family, friends and associates who knew and loved Mr. Carl Whaley. Many of us employees of Daley Corporation (1968-1997) knew him as a beloved boss but also a partner in our success and loyal friend.
If I had to choose one single word to describe Carl Whaley it would be "Inspiration". He lifted and enabled others to reach their own potential with strong leadership, a bold and confident style, endearing manner and incredible salesmanship skills. Those attributes not only touched our lives but continue to live on in all of us.
Recently it was reported that Greenville/Upstate was named as America's 4th fastest growing city. May I dare say that the foundation for today's nationally recognized growth is part of the legacy that Carl Whaley and the "Service Excellence" construction/rental team helped pioneer over many decades in this region. Daley Corporation and its innovative concepts revolutionized the entire construction and rental industry, and it was Carl who led the way! Carl's innovative ideas, boundless enthusiasm, sense of humor and defining life lessons are etched on our hearts. Thank you Carl Whaley; you changed my life so much for the better as well as countless others along your journey. Your kindness, friendship and encouragement to pursue excellence will never be forgotten.
