Carl Welch Obituary

Carl Edward Welch CHARLESTON - Carl passed away peacefully at his home on Dec. 17, 2015. He was born in Huger, SC, to the late Willie Lee and Bessie Bater Welch. Along with his parents, his wife Virginia Cirsosky Welch, preceded him in death. It was with great honor and pride that Carl, a WWII veteran, served in the US Navy from 1943 to 1967 on the LST's 525 and 982, Towhee Minesweeper 388, and Destroyer Vogelgesangsang 862. In recognition of his dedication, he was awarded the World War II Victory Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, Occupation Service Medal, National Defense Medal, and Good Conduct Medal. While serving, Carl married Virginia and raised two boys, Thomas N.P. Duke III, and Harry Eugene Duke. After retiring from the Navy, he enlisted in the Reserves and later retired from civil service, where he was a cook at the Ammunition Depot, receiving numerous awards and letters of commendation for performance and outstanding records. He will be remembered for his love of pecans, baking goodies for everyone, and vegetable gardening up to his last days and passing this knowledge and love to his great-grands. His memory will forever be treasured by his grandchildren, Lennie Woods (Denny), Eugene Duke, Sally Garner (Jerry), Ginny, Thomas and Tyler Duke, and great-grandchildren, Jessie Duke, Hogan Garner, Sara Margaret and Jacqueline Woods. Graveside services will be Monday at 10:00 AM in St. Lawrence Cemetery, Charleston, SC, with full military honors. The family will not be accepting flowers and asks that memorials be made to woundedwarriorproject.org. Wounded Warrior Project P.O.
