Carl Nandrasy
Charleston - Carl Avrille Nandrasy, 92, passed away December 25, 2025, in Charleston, SC.
Born January 19, 1933, in Cleveland, Ohio, he was the son of the late John M. and Mary Gresko Nandrasy of Brunswick, Ohio. He married Sara Vivian Chapman of Sylvester, Georgia on March 12, 1960.
Carl graduated fourth in his class from Brunswick (Ohio) High School in 1951. He graduated from Kent State University in 1955, with a B.S. in Journalism. He also received an M.A. degree in Public Administration (magna cum laude) from Central Michigan University in 1975.
While at Kent State, Carl received an Air Force commission through the AFROTC program. After graduation from Kent State, he worked as reporter and sports editor at the Salem News in Salem, Ohio.
Carl began his military career at the Air Force navigator training school in Harlingen, Texas, receiving his wings in 1957. He would go on to fly 1,500 combat crew hours as navigator aboard a KB-50 aerial refueling tanker and achieve the rank of major. During his military career, he was stationed at Turner AFB, Albany, GA; Biggs AFB, El Paso, TX; Lagas AB, Azores Islands; Clark AB, the Philippines; Hamilton AB, Bermuda; and Wake Island.
After leaving the Air Force, he joined the federal Civil Service, holding positions as Public Affairs Officer at the Charleston Shipyard and Naval Base in Charleston SC. He then received a promotion to become PAO at the DOE's Savannah River Site near Aiken, SC, where he retired with 30 years federal service. He then worked eight years as PAO for Wackenhut Services, the security contractor at the SRS.
He is survived by his wife, Vivian; daughters Lynn Coppotelli (Marc) of Columbia, SC; Alison Levitt (Wes) of Charleston, SC; and son, Scott Nandrasy (Dawn) of Waynesville, OH.
Carl is predeceased by a brother, John Nandrasy (Eleanor). He also is survived by a sister, Arlene Hopf (Howard) of Mt. Upton, NY, and a brother, James Nandrasy (Mary Etta) of Delaware OH; nine grandchildren: Lauren Carlisle (Drew), James Coppotelli (Madeline), Alex Coppotelli (Olivia), Brandon Coppotelli (Melissa), Alan Nandrasy (Suzzy), Morgan Siler (Joel), Lindsey Nandrasy, Andrew Levitt (Elizabeth), and Sara LaBate (Nick), plus six great-grandchildren: Vivian, Magnolia, Neva, Frances, Owen, and Charlie.
Carl was an avid writer, regularly having his letters to the editor published in local newspapers. He also served as editor of a number of church and political newsletters.
Mr. Nandrasy's visitation will be held on Friday, January 2nd from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM at J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., West Ashley Chapel , 3360 Glenn McConnell Parkway, Charleston, SC 29414. The funeral will be held on Saturday, January 3rd at 11:00 AM, at Holy Spirit Evangelical Lutheran Church, 3075 Bees Ferry Road, Charleston, SC 29414. Interment will be at the Ft. Jackson National Cemetery, Columbia, SC.
