Carl Johnson Obituary

Carl Albert Johnson Charleston - Carl Albert Johnson of Charleston, SC, died on October 14, 2021. Carl was born on March 9, 1932, and grew up in Charleston, the youngest of the three sons of William A. Johnson and Lucille Stemmerman Johnson. He was proud to be a fifth generation Charlestonian and cherished this city and his family's role in its long history. He recounted stories his mother told of visiting her grandparents who lived in the Heyward-Washington House and sleeping in the bedroom where our first president stayed during his visit to the colony. Carl graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration from Newberry College. After graduation, he served our country as a communications specialist in the United States Army and was stationed in Germany. He then returned to Charleston to begin his career, retiring in the early '90s as the Business Administrator of the James B. Edwards College of Dental Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina. He was dedicated to his wife of 57 years, Maxine Mitchum Johnson. He was the proud father of three children and an active participant in their lives, serving as basketball coach and youth group leader. He loved athletics and was an exceptional racquetball player. Carl was also deeply devoted to his faith and the support of the ministries of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Charleston, the church his family had attended for many generations. He served in leadership roles in its many ministries, including president of the church council. He also was a member of the fraternal order The Elks. Carl was predeceased by his parents, his brothers and their wives and his youngest grandson, Banks. He lost his beloved wife, Maxine, in February 2020. He is survived by his sons; Carl Albert ("Al") Johnson, Jr. (Alysann Sieren) and Duane H. Johnson (Wendy McKenzie), of Charleston, and his daughter, Brenda Johnson Ladd (Dave), of Daphne, AL. He was the grandfather of five cherished grandchildren: Grayson Ladd of Alabama, and Kaleigh, Addie, Katerina and Eliza Johnson, all of Charleston. A private funeral service and interment will be held at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Charleston. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Downtown Chapel. Memorials may be made to St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, 405 King St., Charleston, SC 29403. Visit our guestbook at legacy.com/obituaries/charleston
