Bruce Bates Obituary

Bruce Wayne Bates DORCHESTER, SC - Bruce Wayne Bates, 65, of Dorchester, SC, husband of Shelby Miller Bates, passed away Saturday, February 14, 2015 at his residence. A Memorial Service will be held Wednesday evening, February 18, 2015 at 5 o'clock at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. Burial of cremains will be at a later date in Brighton, IL. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105. Bruce was born November 17, 1950 in Alton, IL, the son of James and Marjorie Gillen Bates. He served in the US Air Force, fought in the Vietnam War, and had very conservative political views. He worked in the entertainment industry as a League Operator and ran the Atlantic Pool Players Association. In addition to billiards, Bruce enjoyed reading and hunting. Survivors include his wife, Shelby Bates of Dorchester; mother, Marjorie Bates of Godfrey, IL; son, Scott Bates (Melissa); daughter, Stephanie Bates, both of Summerville; step-daughter, Ashley Ellin; four brothers, Dan, Terry, Mike, and Bill; and three grandchildren. Bruce was predeceased by his father, James Bates; daughter, Tracy Bates; and his first wife, Linda Bates.
