Bobb Chandler Obituary

Bobby Joe Chandler CHARLESTON - He was born May 22, 1935, in Demopolis, Alabama, but had lived in the city of Charleston, SC, since the age of one. He was a son of the late John Anthony Chandler and Lillie Mae Chandler Fairchild. He was preceded in death by two brothers, John Anthony Chandler, Jr., and Ronald Lee Fairchild. Also, grandparents Lewis and Beulah Johnson. Bobby Joe was a retired plumber and member of Hampton Park Baptist Church. After high school he served in the United States Army from 1957 to 1959. His friends affectionately called him "Joker." During his high school days in the 50's at Rivers High School, Bobby Joe was known as an outstanding player for the Charleston High "Bantams" football team. Many newspaper articles were written about his ability and accomplishments in playing football. He was a valued player in the City of Charleston Softball League and a player of baseball on his church's league. As a young boy growing up in the City of Charleston, he played many sports at Hampton Park playground. His favorites were baseball and football. As an adult he devoted his time to coaching many young boys in the "Little League Baseball Teams." As the years went by and Bobby Joe became disabled, his love of sports turned to the "Atlanta Braves" baseball team. He watched every game on TV, had a schedule of all the games, and knew all the players by name, subscribed to their magazine, wore their tee shirts, jackets and baseball caps. His room was filled with "Braves" souvenirs that relatives and friends had given him. He is survived by two sisters, Margie Chandler Rubey of Charleston, SC, and Juanita Pendell of Dayton, Ohio, one brother James Alvin Fairchild of Atlanta, Georgia, many nieces and nephews and several cousins. His sweet, kind, gentle and caring spirit lives on in the hearts of his family and all who knew this kind man. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral services at Carolina Memorial Funeral Home, 7113 Rivers Avenue, North Charleston, SC, today, April 14, 2010, at 2:30 p.m. Interment will follow in Carolina Memorial Park. The family will receive guests today, April 14, 2010, from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m., prior to the service. Arrangements are being handled by CAROLINA MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME. My thoughts and prayers are with all the family. I met Bobby when a young teenager. He would play basketball with me and friends at Hampton Park playground. Many years later I married his brother Ronald Fairchild and our relationship grew. Bobby was always a sweet and kind man. He always helped anyone especially family. I will always remember him with love and respect. He is with our loving God. I know he is smiling down at all of us because he is now born again. I know he and Ronald are together with the rest of the family that are already in heaven.
