Billie Dunbar Kirkland CHAPIN, SC - Billie Dunbar Kirkland, age 81, passed away peacefully at her home on Lake Murray in Chapin, South Carolina, February 9, 2017. Ms. Kirkland was born in Allendale, South Carolina, on March 12, 1935, to William Patrick and Sophie Schramm Dunbar. Ms. Kirkland graduated from Allendale High School, received both her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Early Childhood Education and her Interdisciplinary Master of Arts Degree in Natural Science from the University of South Carolina. After teaching middle school life science in Lexington/Richland School District Five for 25 years, she retired, but was later recruited to help the struggling public school system in her hometown of Allendale. Ms. Kirkland was predeceased by her son, Dana Dunbar Kirkland; and is survived by her "Sista", Kathleen Dunbar Myrick of Beaufort; son, Stephen Patrick Kirkland (Janie) of Chapin; daughter, Sophie Louanne Kirkland of Seneca; daughter, Kathleen Kirkland Brunson (Robert) of Sullivan's Island; grandchildren, Brandon Kirkland (Kedron) of Chapin; Brantley Kirkland (Wendy) of Sumter; Kathleen Clarke and Dana Patrick Brunson of Sullivan's Island; and three great grandchildren. Ms. Kirkland to her students, Billie to her friends and family, and Mimi to her grandchildren- she lived a simple life in a renovated boat house on Lake Murray, where her study of nature in her own backyard remained a constant joy. A private graveside service will be held at the Swallow Savannah Cemetery in Allendale, SC. Funeral Arrangements will be handled by Keith Smith Funeral Service, 128 Water Street, Allendale, SC 29810 (803)584-2492. The family would also like to thank Amedisys Hospice Care of West Columbia for their compassionate support. I am so sorry to hear this news. A bright light has left us but I know Heaven is rejoicing! What a strong beautiful woman! I will miss her laugh, contagious smile and big hugs! Prayer for her family as they go through this time but I know that they are celebrating a beautiful life!

I never saw Billie, after high school.
